This thing is pure awesome. The range is spectacular. I have it setup on the main floor in the middle of the house. The house has a rock / cement wall on one side, aluminium siding on the other 3 sides. With previous routers (a TP-LINK TD8960Nv3 and a WRT54G), i'd barely get any signal right outside the walls. With this guy, not only is the signal great outside, it's good to the end of the yard, about 200 feet every way, including about 100 feet of forest! At that point the link is down to 5Mbps, but still rock-solid.
The wizard is great, too. I've set it up as an AP-only, and it was simple as pie. Once setup, it's got a LOT of settings accessible to tune things your way if you want to geek out. And if that isn't enough yet, this R7000 (that's the actual model, not clear in the description) is supported by DD-WRT.

Totally satisfied. I have at times like 10 cel phones connected when my kids and their friends are at honme, plus 3 tV's streaming video, xbox, games,3 computers etc,. This product solved all my problems. I have Shaw extreme so you know but this thing is quick and goes everywhere. I like many other people had a D-Link DIR 601 router and just kept experimenting a lot of stuff including an Actiontec Powerline Adapter Kit I put in just to get the signal going from my old router to one TV downstairs. Paid $60 something dollars to solve the problem for one of my 15 devices in the house with this device. I read all the reviews for the NightHawk and was not wrong when I did this buy. I still need to learn when and how to use the 5 GHZ option, the USB ports, etc.

I upgraded to this router from Asus RT-N56U which was also a great router but I needed something with higher speed over longer distance. For that purpose, this is the best I could get at the time of the purchase. I have placed this in the basement and I don't have any problem with the signal any where in my 2 story 1700 sq ft house.

Pros:
- Better signal over longer distance
- No signal drops
- Stable firmware
- Able to handle heavy loads without any issue

Cons:
- USB storage is still not very good even at this price. Transfer speed to the attached HDD is slow and the copying files sometimes fail. Heard some issues with file corruptions too but I haven't seen that yet. Fingers crossed.
- Admin GUI could be better.

Overall, this is a great router and I would recommend this definitely. I used the DD-WRT (Kong) firmware on this for a while but was facing signal drops so went back to the Netgear firmware and it is stable now.

Fought with a Linksys WRT1900ac for several months before opting for the R7000. Have owned or used routers from D-Link, the original Linksys, Belkin, Asus, TP-Link. This is my first Netgear product. It's a big fella (much like the WRT1900ac), so make room. It's been working without a hitch right out of the box (with the latest firmware). I have 11 clients in my home (soon to be 13). Two ac, a 5ghz laptop, a 5ghz tablet, a 5ghz cellphone and a host of 2.4ghz appliances. This, in an environment that includes an HDMI TV transmitter (on the 5ghz band) and a Vera Lite home automation controller. Unfazed is the R7000. I do not use parental controls, VPN, or any of the storage capabilities. QOS is activated (downstream) as are beamforming and "airtime fairness." The interface is a bit on the clunky side, but that's a minor nit. It gets the job done (and more intuitively than some others). Pricier than a "basic" router, but worth the expense. (Have dropped stock FW in favour of Xwrt-Vortex - based on an Asus build. Solid, much more useful than stock, a joy to use).

This is a pretty stable router even with the stock firmware. There is a tomato and dd-wrt build for this router but mine runs so smoothly with the stock firmware that I saw no reason to change it.
As for the corrupted usb files, it sounds like perhaps a permissions problem with the drive, had a similar issue with my buffalo nas.
Try formatting the drive and this time copy files to it connected to the usb ready share port from your computer to the drive.

This is an exceptional product! Went from the TPLink450 (which fried after 6 months) to this router. It is very very impressive in speed, reliability, connectivity and ease of setup. Plug in and follow instructions in just a few minutes. Also to note is the distance which this router goes. Our home is 6000 sq ft and I am able to get connectivity through our home and even on our grounds. Network printer setup is a breeze and it also comes with a Genie software which includes seeing your traffic flow. Excellent price for an excellent product.. Even better on sale! Highly recommend!

Upgraded from our old 600N router and wow what a difference. In our 3 storey house the WiFi is strong on all floors (router located on middle floor). Got a NAS hooked up to it and it streams quite well to our mobile and tablet devices. No problem connecting gaming consoles through WiFi or Ethernet connecting to HTPC.

Router is pretty quiet and stays relatively cool while running. The LEDs are damn bright but can be turned off from the UI which is a nice feature: I put mine behind a picture frame and that solved the problem just as well.
