Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Sparks (A Bend in the Road, etc.) logs more miles on the winding high road of romance with the story of two middle-aged people who meet by chance in the small North Carolina coastal town of Rodanthe. The impassioned but doomed romance seems to owe much to Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County. Once again, a housewife who has focused on everyone but herself indulges in a brief, intense, secret affair with a stranger who changes her life forever. As the story begins, Adrienne Willis is 60, the divorced mother of three grown children. To help her troubled daughter cope with the untimely recent death of her husband, Adrienne tells her the tale of her love affair, which took place 15 years before. At the time, Adrienne was an uptight matron whose ex-husband had just left her for a younger woman. This rejection colors her entire life, and Sparks realistically portrays a vulnerable and isolated woman who throws herself into raising her children to escape her despair. Paul Flanner, her paramour, is a surgeon and an obsessive workaholic with no genuine connection to his wife or son, whose world completely falls apart when one of his patients inexplicably dies. Sparks builds a taut, plausible relationship between his protagonists, but even fans may be irked by the obviousness of their story and the inevitability of their fate.

From AudioFile

Adrienne Willis's concern for her widowed daughter prompts her to relate a story she thought would live only in her own heart, a story of love and redemption, loss and grief. JoBeth Williams's tender narration captures the introspection and sadness of Adrienne's tale, as well as its passion. Her detached portrayal of Paul and Adrienne's lives before they find each other conveys all the flatness of their existence, despite the many events filling their days. Williams's characterizations, however, particularly that of the women, would be better if they were not infused with Southern accents. While technically accurate, they sound more stereotypical than real. Soft piano interludes elegantly separate chapters and polish the finished work. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Quick, Satisfying Love Story, Feb 25 2009
By J Bug "SUNNIE Day reader" (British Columbia, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Even in a book that's only 222 pages long Nicholas Sparks manages to weave his magic. Building a level of suspense as we await breathless to learn of Paul's fate. Reminisent of Bridges Of Madison County this is a quick, easy read but a great story nontheless.

The story begins with Adrienne telling her widowed daughter the tale of her brief love affair fourteen years earlier with a surgeon named Paul. We then alternate between Paul and Adrienne's points of view as we learn the story of their lives and what brought them each to divorce before they found themselves at the inn in Rodanthe.

With a violent storm brewing our protagonists share a walk on the beach and two meals together, then fall hopelessly in love. (this did feel a little rushed to me but whatever it's Nicholas Sparks we all know where he's going) After five blissful days together Paul leaves Rodanthe to join his son at the medical clinic in Ecuador. Promising to return to Adrienne at Christmas so they can have their HEA but...well it's Nicholas Sparks isn't it.

This is a quick, smooth read with well developed characters and the typical tugging of the heartstrings we have all come to expect from N.S.

Recommended for an afternoon at the beach or a short flight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!, Aug 13 2008
By A. Gies "Book Lover" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nights in Rodanthe (Hardcover)
This was an incredible read. I read it all in one day at my cottage. This book kept me captivated right from the start and continually had me wanting more. Sparks is an incredible writer. This is my 4th Nicolas Sparks novel and I will continue to be a fan of his and continue reading his books. Nights in Rodanthe allows you to believe that love is possible at any age. That when you least expect it, love can come your way and can make you remember one weekend for the rest of your life. There is no time limit on when you are to fall in love. This book makes you realize it is possible to fall in love in one weekend and to hold on to those feelings for a lifetime. I recommend this novel to anyone. Whether you are looking for an amazing read or a reason to want to fall in love, read this novel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and quick read, Jul 20 2004
By Kathryn Baker (Illinois, United States) - See all my reviews
This is not my favorite Sparks book, but it was still very enjoyable. It was a quick read (even for a slow reader like me!) and very difficult to put down. As with other Sparks books, you'll feel tugs at your heartstrings. This is a good book to read to escape the chaos of life and be part of a good love story.
