This review is from: Nine Rules To Break When Romancing A Rake (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed this novel. I liked the characters and the plot. However, there were quite a few things I didn't like. I'm very picky when it comes to historical romance novels, I've been reading this genre since I was 14 and so I know what I want when it comes to a romance book. What I look for is more romance less sex. To me sex scenes do not equal romance and this book had far to many cheesy sexual scenes for my taste. I thought the hero and heroine didn't spend enough time just talking to one another, instead every time they were together it was about something sexual. Personally I don't know how he fell in love with her based on their time together, but I've learned to accept that that is how it works in the world of romance novels. Anyways, this is just mostly my opinion, the writing itself was excellent and I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of this genre. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments and quite a few lines that were just perfectly delivered at the right time. I most likely will read another by MacLean and I give this book 3 out of 5. I should probably say I rate historical romance novels a little more harshly than others because this is my favorite genre and I expect a lot of the books I read in it, so maybe if this book had been a different genre it would have gotten a higher rating

Something Old, but Something New....,
This review is from: Nine Rules To Break When Romancing A Rake (Mass Market Paperback)
As a rule, I never buy a book that is not a New York Times Bestseller or A USA TOday Bestseller. Somehow, from the corner of my eye, I spied Ms. MacLean's book sitting at the bottom of a shelf in our local bookstore. I was trying on new books that day and I had four, for some reason, I picked Nine Rules... to read first. And oh boy was I glad I did!!!!
This book is definitely going to be in my must-read-every-night-before-I-go-to-bed books! Admittedly, the plot is a cliche of the many historical romances out there. In fact, I could see the influence of Julia Quinn, Judith McNaught and Lisa Kleypas in the story. This is probably part of the reason why I loved it. The story was not hurried, you could actually tell when the characters are starting to fall in love. In short, the romance was not forcefully written. The drama was controlled, and it was quite a lot. I love the fact that it was always the girl who was being aggravated. The misunderstandings between the hero and heroine have been written a lot of times before, but the way they were thrown in the story and how the heroine dealt with it was less predictable. What i mind quite a bit was their fights did not last that long, which kind of took the fun out of them cause I couldn`t wallow in the bittersweet feeling as much, but that`s just me. The epilogue was very short, but also sweet. It kind of ended where everything started. I just wish that the author could have shown what their lives were like after four or five years. It just gives the story a more continuous feeling. Other than that. It was a great read! It`s been a long time since I read a book that I didn`t feel the need to skip pages to get to the end. With Nine Rules...time and pages flew by, and I wish there were 400 more pages to read after that. =) The story is kind of like an accumulation of the books that I`ve read and still love to read, it`s old and tried already and the author is someone new I can follow. I`m so excited to read her other works. =)

I read about 6 books a week so I go through a lot of books. I really enjoyed this one and am almost tempted to name something Calpurnia just because I liked the heroine so much. Laugh out loud humour. Will definitely be reading the next one in the series.
