1.0 out of 5 stars another one for the bonfire, May 3 2009

Swayed by the positive reviews, and probably among the people who rated the gibberish review as helpful, I took a chance on this book. So really, I only have myself to blame, but I thought to offer a little warning for other fools like myself. The content of Harvey's book is forgettable, but it has something to do with the mundanity of a seaside town and the protagonist's perspective of this totally exhausted kind of speculation. I thought his wife's madness might be of some interest, but it is all too contrived and presented more to dazzle than to elucidate or explore. Maybe this changes later on, but only a few chapters in the bad eroticism began to creep in too regularly and I eventually had to throw the book onto the floor. I am all for eroticism, even the occasional vulgarities of de-eroticism, but not the sort of tedium to be found here, obliging the more discerning reader to skip ahead pages at a time. Maybe if you are fifteen or this kind of redundancy is your style this book might be of interest, but perhaps you would be more interested in a full-blown romp, such as Charles Platt's "The Gas."

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, Disturbing, Beautiful, May 31 2006

As usual, Harvey's narrative [...] into the world of his characters immediately. He's a master craftsman when it comes both to story and the written word. The themes in Nine-Tenths Unseen are pretty heavy and some of it can be disturbing, but rest assured that you are reading the work of a master, and he knows where he's going. I highly recommend it!
