5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful a real treat, Jan 3 2006
By A Customer
If you are someone who likes to see the details of clothes to get an idea of how they have been constructed then this is for you. It isn't like the Janet Arnold books, in that it will not give you pattern pieces to show construction details, but shows detailed, beautiful, richly coloured pictures of high end historic fashions. For those of you who have the Threads magazines, this is like the historic/ vintage back cover dress details that they do. It focuses on a particular detail of the clothing, say the waist or collar, and gives you a close up picture with a description. It also gives a line drawing of the complete item, usually front & back.
If you want a book to show how fashions evolved over the century then this will not help you as it groups by themes rather than showing clothing chronologically. It groups into themes such as "the male image" (men's & women's clothes with a masculine feel) or "the natural world" (pictures of birds/flowers as well as a hat trimmed with a stuffed bird) but it does tell you when each item was believed to be made.
As someone who loves the costume rooms at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and who can spend hours there with my face pressed against the glass, wishing I'd brought a magnifying glass, this is heaven. If you are less dedicated than that, it is both a beautiful coffee table book and a very useful source of ideas for details & embellishments on modern clothes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, Jan 11 2008

A wonderful book, with beautiful pictures of gorgeous clothes. I spent hours salivating over the pictures! I just wish they had put more full shots in, as the details were so wonderful I would have liked to see the whole costume. But I wasn't expecting any different, as it is "Fashion in Detail". Makes a great coffee table book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for sewing enthusiasts, Mar 3 2011
This review is from: Nineteenth Century Fashion in Detail (Paperback)
This book is fabulous. It has great written descriptions as well as close up photos so you can really see how the various elements were created. The only improvement I can see is that it would have been nice to see a small inset of the whole article of clothing.
