This review is from: Star Fox 64 3D (Video Game)
Star Fox 64 3D is a remake of a game for the Nintendo 64, now for the 3DS. It is a third person shooter, while also being a flight simulator. The majority of the game is on rail, meaning you can only move forward, although you can brake briefly. The boss levels or certain other levels will allow you to move around freely (from side to side or backwards or whatnot). In your plane, you have to shoot everything in your path basically, whilst making sure to keep the other members of your Star Fox team alive. The characters in this game range are all cartoony with distinctive personalities, and they range from funny and helpful to annoying and whiny. This game has only has around 15-17 levels, and most if not all of them are under 10 minutes. They are extremely fun to play. On each playthrough, you only play about 5-7 levels, depending on the paths you take. However, you will want to replay the game to experience all the levels. And even after you've played them all, you'll want to keep playing them over and over. The basic path is pretty easy and never actually gets that challenging. But if you do well, or accomplish a mission in a certain way, you'll be able to take a more difficult path and some of those levels are rather hard. The modes in this game are Main Game, Battle Mode, and Score Attack. In the main game, you will go through the campaign and beat all of those levels while experiencing a light but fun storyline with minor cutscenes. You can play this in Nintendo 3DS mode or Nintendo 64 mode. The difference is that the Nintendo 3DS mode can use the gyroscope to control your ship instead of the analog stick. The 64 mode will not allow you to save progress, so if you die or quit before you're done, you start all over again from the very beginning. I personally recommend 3DS mode with gyro off. The ability to save is helpful, but gyro is a pretty awful control scheme in my opinion. Battle Mode is sort of mini game/ multiplayer mode. There are a couple different short games where you try to beat your opponent. You can choose whether you want your opponent to be a CPU, which isn't all that fun, or you can play against your friends with download play. That means with one copy of the game you can have four people playing LOCALLY against each other. But this is only local. There is NO online multiplayer, which really is annoying. This game would have been fantastic online and it seems like Nintendo just didn't want to make the effort and they know it. Score Attack lets you play any level you've already beaten in the main game and just play that one, without storyline involved. It's a nice addition. All in all, this game is probably not worth the 40 dollars. However, if you've bought a 3DS, it probably means you're willing to accept that 40 bucks is what you'll be paying for software. This game isn't a reason to buy the 3DS. If you have one, I think this is definitely in the top 3 games out now, and you should get it. If you don't have a 3DS yet, there are many great games coming up (Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Mario Tennis, Kid Icarus Uprising, Luigi's Mansion, Resident Evil Revelations, Animal Crossing, Bit trip Saga, Sonic Generations, Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter 4, Super Smash Bros. 4, Tekken 3DS, Metal Gear Solid, and Fire Emblem). None of these games other than Bit Trip Saga are coming out before November. The majority are coming for December/ January, and many are not coming until much later in 2012. So I recommend getting a 3DS at one point, its just that it isn't a necessity right now. This game isn't a must buy either, although I guarantee you will enjoy it. This and Ocarina of time are, right now, the only two 3DS games that are extremely awesome, which is kind of sad because they are both remakes. Actually, the really sad this is that every single one of the games listed in the upcoming games are either sequels, compilations, ports, or remakes. Still, they are all mostly original content, and I am looking forward to them no matter the origin.
