Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is a unique puzzle adventure for Nintendo DS and DSi in which the player reveals the game's story and unravels its mystery little by little with each puzzle successfully solved. The third US release in the popular Professor Layton game franchise, Unwound Future contains the same addictive gameplay, hand-painted art style graphics and invocative music as its two predecessors, making it a must-have title for both new puzzle players and longtime fans of the series. Additional features include: 165 built-in puzzles, easy to use hint and game save systems and additional puzzles available for download on a weekly basis for a limited time following game launch.
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future places the professor and his trusted apprentice Luke at the center of a spellbinding adventure after they receive a strange letter – sent by Luke 10 years in the future. According to this message something is askew in the days to come. The London of the future is in chaos and disarray, and according to Luke, the only person who can help set things right is Professor Layton.
Like all games in the Professor Layton series Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is a single player puzzle adventure. Puzzles are essentially brainteasers touching on a large variety of puzzle types, including spatial orientation, logic, riddles and many more. The game's story reveals itself as the player successfully solves a minimum number of puzzles that she/he faces using the DS stylus to move throughout the game's hand-drawn style game environments. Success at puzzle solving earns the player in-game coins. A certain number of coins can also found by simply exploring the game environment. Players are given multiple chances to solve puzzles and when stuck can choose to spend coins in order to buy hints. The game keeps track of puzzles found, puzzles solved, the player's score and playing time, and features easy-to-use save functionality, a journal for note keeping and an area to save items found for later use. In addition to the game's 165 built-in puzzles, additional puzzles will be available for download on a weekly basis for a limited time after game launch.

Professor Layton and his loyal apprentice Luke are back in their third (of four) puzzle-solving adventure for the Nintendo DS. A time machine demonstration goes wrong, and its inventor and several others disappear in the accident. Layton then receives a letter from someone claiming to be Luke from ten years into the future. The game is played entirely with the touch screen. It's a user-friendly system and a simple formula, but manages to draw you in with its characters and mystery story. If you weren't already a fan before, this one probably won't convert you, but returning players will find the general formula improved in key ways. There's more voice acting than the previous games, which makes the story more enjoyable, and the puzzles feel more related to specific areas and characters. Thankfully there's less backtracking than the last game. You steadily gain access to new areas, populated by new characters, which helps to keep things fresh. There are three new mini games to distract you from the actual adventure: the toy car; the parrot; and the sticker books. One of Layton's 'perks' are the weekly downloadable puzzles. You have to connect your Nintendo DS to the internet, and it will unlock any puzzles that are available. This is kind of stupid, because the game isn't really 'downloading' the puzzles; they're already on the game card (it is simply 'unlocking' them). Connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi isn't always easy, so why force players to connect at all? It could be said that these games are nothing more than dressed-up activity books (many of the puzzles were originally created for just that purpose), but that would be doing them a huge disservice. The latest chapter is the best yet, with a more interesting mystery and deeper characterization that will have you tapping the screen like a good page-turner. Unfortunately the story is a little too far-fetched to be a truly satisfying mystery. PROs: 165 Puzzles! 3 Optional mini-games Excellent production values Fun characters & story CONs: Pacing is a bit slow Some puzzles are trick questions Sticker book mini-game is lame Forces players to connect online for extras Story is totally far-fetched

Once again Professor Layton and Luke have managed to keep me playing well beyond reasonable limits. All of the Professor Layton games are the equivalent of a real page-turner of a novel. Now all I want to know is -- when can I play the next one? When Diablo first arrived on the gaming scene I spent a great deal too many hours hacking and slashing my way through the Diablo Universe. I was (and still am) addicted to the game. Professor Layton delivers the same kind of addicting gameplay. It seems strange to compare a role-playing game like Diablo to the serene and intellectual Layton but, in my admittedly odd corner of the cosmos, both games offer the same "just five more minutes" need to kill one more skeleton or solve one more puzzle. Rarely do sequels measure up to the original however the storyline in The Unwound Future is actually a bit more compelling than the previous Professor Layton offerings. The puzzles are a nice mix of easy to extremely difficult (for me anyway!). The three "bonus" games are enjoyable but the sticker books are, perhaps, the weakest link in the game. They seem to be geared to a much younger audience and, while I enjoy sharing my Professor Layton games with my seven-year-old granddaughter, it would have been nice to have a bit more of a challenge for myself -- even my granddaughter was surprised with how easy the three sticker books were. If you want to completely loose yourself in a game then this is the one to buy. The puzzle format allows for quick game-play on the bus or total immersion once you get home from a hard day at work and need to unwind. Highly recommended!

I have played all three of these Professor Layton puzzle games and find them very enjoyable. A few of the puzzles are not worded very well, but for the most part, are quite clever and entertaining. The story is fun and the scenes are well done. The games also include extra fun activities such as a book for which you collect stickers during the game, that you must place in the right spots on the page so the book tells a coherent story. Each game contains around 130 puzzles so you can make it last quite a long time. It's a great choice for adults as well as kids even though the story is told from a young boy's point of view.
