The game was purchased as a family gift for Christmas. Played with it for a few days and it's been once in a while since. Our kids (two boys 9 and 11) don't seem too excited about it. But that's just us.

A game that is either as complex or as simple as you want it to be.,

You've all seen how you manipulate the instruments using the Wii Remote, Nunchuck, and perhaps balance board in Wii Music. With regards to how to interact with the game, some instruments perform better than others. Those that require moving the remote/nunchuck have reasonable response with a bit of lag, those that use buttons work very well, and IMHO the balance board is so delayed that it's pretty much useless. What no-one knows at this time, however, is how truly deep this game is. That is, how many layers of notes has Nintendo provided in here in order to allow you to improvise and create music of your own. My experience with this is mixed thus far, but I've only had the game for a few days. This is a question that will truly only be answered over years, not days. I have, however, discovered that you will only get out of this game what you put into it. IMHO, the complexity in this game comes from trying to improvise something new that "works" aesthetically. This is a hard thing to do - but not nearly as hard as studying jazz for 10 years in order to improvise. You have to find the lines in the music and work with them to create your song. I have a running challenge on one review website right now to beat my improv jam... it's a hard thing to do - and anyone that thinks this game is simple should try doing this and decide for themselves. Only time will tell, however, how deep the improvisation really is. So far, though, I've been very impressed.

I ordered this game because I thought it would be a lot of fun. The commercials reflected it as a family oriented game. It looked more interesting then it actually turned out to be for me personally. My kids love it though. So I would say it is more suited for kids aged 8-12.
