Product Description

Product Description

The singer/songwriter's phenomenally successful 1999 solo album debut.

Dido's debut is moulded from Sarah McLachlan's intimate soul, Sinead O'Connor's Celtic yelp, and Beth Orton's morose resolve--with all the sharp edges rounded out. Sculpted by producers Rollo (her brother) and techno-scientist Youth, No Angel is dream-pop mixed with Portishead-esque trip-hop; the results are mid-tempo ballads that would feel at home in Seal's neighbourhood. The melancholy opener, "Here With Me", incorporates acoustic rhythm guitar, fluid strings and a snare-driven tempo that simulates the slapping of rain on a windscreen. "My Lover's Gone" is ethereal and misty, sounding at once ancient and modern with its synthesised ocean sounds and seagull cries. The only clunker is "Don't Think of Me", a passive, soft-bellied cousin to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know". These songs play out beautifully in that quiet zone between slumber and consciousness--where you can see everything behind closed eyes. --Beth Massa

This is one of those albums that deserved to sell millions of copies. I understand why so many people compare her to Sarah McLachlan and Sinead O'Connor, but that isn't a bad thing at all. Would you rather hear someone who sounds like those two great artists or someone who sounds like the latest cookie cutter teen pop tart? Dido's voice is not interchangeable with most of what's out there right now, and that's what I like about her.
1)Here With Me: this song never gets old. It's one of my favorite songs on the album.
2)Hunter: a really good song. She sounds really good here.
3)Don't Think of Me: could have been a really big hit. She nails this song.
4)My Lover's Gone: very cool song. I really like it.
5)All You Want: worth the price of the CD alone. I like the little twist at the end.
6)Thank You: this song was deservedly a big hit. Somehow I never got sick of it.
7)Honestly OK: another really good song.
8)Slide: I like this song a lot. It is very good.
9)Isobel: she finds an interesting way to sing about a controversial topic. It's a good song.
10)I'm No Angel: I like this song. It is a good song for her.
11)My Life: one of my favorites. She sounds really good here.
12)Take my Hand: another great song. It could have been a big hit.
You can't go wrong with this album. It is very good and it's about as good as debut albums get.

this is an excellent album. i bought the cd after i first heard "here with me" way back in 1999. i thought it was a very clever song , and that dido had one of the most unique voices i have heard. buying this album, was a right desicion. "here with me" is a very good radio song, but it is one that,i have never, i mean never have gotten bored of. it really is that good. hunter, is another great song. as well as "don't think of me" , "all you want", "thank you" which is another of one of "our songs" between my boyfriend and I. other good tracks are "i'm no angel" and i really , really like the track "take my hand" which is a really cool, dance number. the thing to note about dido's music, is that everything from dido's voice, the lyrics and the production are awesome. i want to say that this album is more of a pop-rock chillout album. hmm... a new music category? (lol) i think a lot of people can relate to dido's music, because it gets personal. you can really relate to what she is singing, which is rare. i have to say that this is one of my favorite albums that i have ever owned. it came out in 1999 and here it is 2004 and i am still playing it more than most of my other 300 or so cd's..... the only exception... her second cd, which sounds just as good as this one!!!!!
a "real must buy"

It's no news to anyone that Dido was shot out of relative obscurity into worldwide fame when Eminem used a portion of her song 'Thank You' in his huge hit 'Stan'. However, she should not be pushed aside and thought of only as "that girl who sat on the toilet and sang a couple lines in a pretty good rap song". Dido is an amazing talent, and definitely deserves all the publicity and success she receives. If you're a fan of amazing lyrics, genuine beauty, and simple - though still amazing - music, Dido is your kind of musician.
A voice that is beautiful, pure, and soulful all in one, helps to set Dido apart for the crowd of other "pop-stars" her age. She also has true talent (which is oftentimes quite rare in the music industry these days), which can be adored by music lovers of all kinds. She writes as though she has experienced life from many perspectives, and it seems impossible to doubt that she has when listening to any of her lyrics. My personal favorite tracks are 'Hunter', 'Don't Think Of Me', 'Honestly OK', 'Isobel', and 'Take My Hand'. I'd recommend Dido's 'No Angel' to all fans of soulful, personal, and very inspiring music. And if you like what you hear, Dido's sophomore release, 'Life For Rent' is just as good as - if not better than - 'No Angel'.

The Russian mystic GI Gurdjieff says people are not born with souls, most people have insignificant souls, and those who do only have souls if they grow them! They grow them through patient work to overcome adversity, perhaps dealing with difficult people, and pain in life.
Dido strikes me as someone who has a soul. She seem to write from a place deep within her (as opposed to the superficiality of most pop singers her age). She writes as someone with more experience than her age. Within this place where she writes there seems to be much pain, sadness and melancholy. I don't believe this is a pose. But this area from which she writes communicates or resonates with many listeners. The writing seems like non-fiction, autobiography. It's all out there and it's all exposed.
The music here has an underlying wistful sadness, even the more (nearly) upbeat tunes. From a musical perspective, this is good and bad - there is little contrast in tempo and emotional content between many of the songs herein. Dido sings with a soft voice and a somewhat limited pitch range.
Musically, a little more contrast would help. But what's there, if it resonates with you, communicates to the heart.
