Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Unlike Drake's Branded Hearts, her latest, set primarily in 19th-century Blackfoot country, is rushed and slapped together. Readers familiar with her works may feel cheated upon entering Skylar Conner's topsy-turvy world. Skylar is on the run from her powerful, murderous stepfather. In her flight, she encounters the kind Lord David Douglas, who offers her sanctuary in marriage. What he doesn't tell her is that the marriage is by legal proxy to his youngest son. After the wedding, Lord Douglas dies (of natural causes), and Skylar treks to his estate in the Dakota Badlands. En route, her stagecoach is attacked by a Sioux raiding party and she is taken captive by the leader, who takes her to an isolated cabin, where he re-invents the bodice-ripping hero of 1970s' romances. Hawk is in fact Lord Douglas's half-breed son (surprised?) and hence Skylar's husband. The unhappiness caused by this discovery is compounded by Hawk's suspicions about Skylar's role in his father's death. Drake asks the reader for a healthy dose of suspended disbelief; Hawk slips too easily from war paint in one scene to smoking jacket in the next. There are other problems: Skylar's stubbornly (or stupidly, depending on your P.O.V.) guarded secret and two major unresolved issues that make a sequel inevitable. Even so, that's no excuse for the loose ends.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yuck., Mar 29 2004
By
This review is from: No Other Man (Mass Market Paperback)
What an awful book! Skylar was horribly stupid, and Hawk's litany about the plight of half-breeds was boring and by the middle of the book I was hoping Skylar's evil stepfather would find her and kill her.

I suppose I should have known that the book was going to be awful when the hero (who is so clearly the hero by the description of his blazing green eyes and tanned and rippling muscles even though it doesn't say so right away) kidnaps the heroine and rapes her. (...) Well, after the initial pain of him breaking through her maidenhead. And then it goes on to Skylar and her stupid unimportant secrets that she only keeps because it gives her something to be miserable about. And then, as at the end of all Shannon Drake books, the reader is told that the characters, after two hundred pages of violent sex and petty fights are in love. I can't help but wonder- when did that happen?

Okay, what I am trying to say is that this book is really one big cliche, and not even a good one. If you want a good romance read Marsha Canham, read Teresa Meirdos, those are real romances.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had Potential/Cliches and Secrets Ruined It, Mar 16 2004
This review is from: No Other Man (Mass Market Paperback)
The plot premise had potential - marriage between two strangers. In the hands of a more skilled author, this could have been an excellent book. Unfortunately, the author ruined this book with 'secrets', forced seductions, and cliches. First, Skylar's secret was really lame. It was never believable that she didn't confess all as she grew to know Hawk. Second, I like a forced seduction as much as the next romance reader, but the ones in here were really lame. It was difficult to believe that there was any attraction between the characters at all. Third, Skylar was a really dumb heroine. Why can't this author create a heroine who can get herself out of trouble instead of relying on the hero to do it for her? Just pass on this one.
