Product Description

This story is now available in the first Dire Calls bundle: The Partners.

After a year on the Job in Homicide Squad, Detective Third Class Griffon Dire is up for promotion. All that remains to be seen is if the review board signs off on a bump to second class. Yet Dire soon discovers that simple interviews are often anything but...

Detective First Class Hargold Thief, Dire's partner, is waiting with a case as Griffon emerges from the grueling interrogation. The call leads to the scene of a brutal, bloody murder complete with a vindictive sexual overtone.

Dire and Thief have an idea of who killed their victim, but the question is: why? In the end, seeking the answer to that question will cost Griffon more than he expects as he discovers that some motives for murder seem far too reasonable...

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick case and insight Mar 7 2013

NOON HGH opens in the Homicide Unit of New Dagonia. The squad members stand around bantering and use a lot of "colorful" language. The language is much less blue in the rest of the novella.
Griff is getting ready for the board interview required for him to get a promotion. Unfortunately, we don't learn what he is asked, only that it was rough. As he leaves, he is assigned to work on a homicide. The scene of the crime and the corpse are described in much detail. As they interview the neighbor who called the police, she tells them that she saw the man's daughter running by her apartment "covered in blood."
The rest of the story details how they try to locate the daughter, how Griff tries to get her to come to a safe location to talk, and how he learns what motivated her. While this sounds routine, it isn't because of where they carry on their conversation and how the episode effects him.
The story moves quickly and has a sense of reality to go with the drama and a little bit of mystique.

This is the next installment in the Dire Crimes series. We find Detective Dire expecting a promotion and ending up investigating a brutal murder. The reader gets added insight as to Dire's unique abilities as he goes above and beyond the call of duty to pull a young girl off a ledge. Captivating and emotional read. Well done!

The second in the Dire Calls series of short stories. Detective Dire continues to investigate the crimes of the city. Further development of his character. What forces and talents does he bring to his job? Here he becomes a more complex character than in the first series. Nice character development on the part of the author.
