A stranger (Stellan Skarsgard) arrives at a small neglected farm in Texas at the turn of the century looking for work. He is hired but the friendly but shiftless farmer (Fred Ward) as a hand and proceeds to transform the farm into a going concern over the next several years through his constant hard work. As the relationship between the farmer, his family and the quiet, shy farmhand develops, their dependence on him increases to such a degree that it eventually leads the farmer to the disastrous action which will change their lives. I thought this was a beautifully told story with uniformly exellent performances. Skarsgard especially gave a nuanced performance as the eccentric, hard working farmhand with a haunted past.
