I was very disappointed in this movie. I too am a Jennifer Lewis fan and she attracted me to renting the movie. Yet, the only characters I enjoyed were Lewis (Nora), Jones, and Ali. Lil' Kim, Bobby Brown, and Whitney Houston should not have been in the movie. The director, in his interview said that they were looking for a hip hop element to be included in this "Urban" film. Wrong Idea. If you look at Barbershop, although Ice-Cube and Eve were the so-called "Hip Hop" element you forgot that they were rappers, in how good they performed. I don't really see Ice-Cube as a rapper, but a actor now. Nora's Hair Salon, needed to be innovative and try something new. It gets tiring to see the same old "Black" movie do the same thing, which is nothing. I want someone to make a movie that is going to appeal to other aspects of life than me going to the Beauty Salon. Yes I seen Barbershop 1 and 2, and enjoyed it. (Barbershop 1 was Better) and yes there is a Beautyshop movie with Queen Latifah coming soon, and I pray that this one fairs better than Nora's Hair Salon. I just hope that they stop making silly movies with Black stars, just to make a movie. Nora's Hair Salon had quality Actresses and Actors, I just hope that they can get quality scripts to make quality movies, not this junk that has been given to us. How do producers and diretors expect to be supported when they give audiences the same old junk? Then they cry that no African Americans are being nominated for awards. "Make quality movies with fresh new story-lines" No wonder most of our "Black" movies are on video in a month after release or go to video without being in one theater.

I was so excited that Jenifer Lewis was starring in another film and I anticipated the release immensely, as I am a HUGE Jenifer Lewis fan. I have almost everything she's been in from her days on In Living Color to Jackie's Back to episodes of Girlfriends. I left work early the day of the release of Nora's Hair Salon just to buy it. After watching this movie, I was so disappointed to see such a watered down play on her natural personality on screen. Was I expecting too much? I just thought this movie was a complete waste of her talent. She even seemed somewhat repressed during certain scenes in the movie (nothing at ALL like her character Jackie Washington in JACKIE'S BACK, which is in the top 3 of my favortie movies of all time). Additionally, Tamala Jones has seen much better parts and is so much more of a comedic entertainer than this film allowed her to be. On the upside, I was very impressed by Tatyana Ali's performance. Although she was great in THE BROTHERS, she shined even brighter in this film. Unfortunately, the ONLY reason I bought this DVD is because as I said earlier, I am a HUGE Jenifer Lewis fan and will continue to support anything she's in and I look forward to seeing more of her.

I think this film a great story but the writing wasn't that
interesting to really pull it off. The director in the special
featurette says the idea to write it came from the fact that
Barbershop made a lot of money and felt that it was obvious a
Beautyshop counterpart needed to be made. However, Barbershop
was not that great of a film to begin with in my opinion and you really can't compare this film with it. Notably this film wasn't really funny. Although I'm crazy about Jenifer Lewis (Nora), she's not given a good script to work with here. It's also nice to see Tatiyana Ali. I will say Nora's Hair Salon
seemed to be on the right track but something is definitely
amiss. It needs more juice.

I was actually excited to get this movie. I had ambitions that it was going to be a hysterical laugh from beginning to end. I was wrong. There are it's funny parts, it's sterotypical parts, and it's parts that get your heart to warm up. Although it has a good meaning and theme goin on, I got tired of it quickly. It's like a low budget film and something that should have been on Lifetime. All of the actors played their role well, (although I thought that Delicious was being overly dramatic and portraying homosexuals in an ill manner). Overall, I can't say I liked it nor disliked it. It was OK. I just learned not to have many high expectations of a movie based on it's lead actor.

This movie was good. It had excellent potential. It is the female "Barbershop". I was disappointed that lil kim received credit as well as appeared on the cover when she was only in the movie twice. Whitney Houston on the other hand put in a surprise appearance, but did not allow her name to be used in the film. Bobby Brown played his normal "bad boy" role well. The actors all did a great job. The script was well written. I also loved that oriental actors were also used in the film.I would definitely reccommend viewing this film of talented people of color.
