Product Description

**WINNER OF THE BEST UNPUBLISHED NOVEL IN THE 2010 NEW YORK BOOK FESTIVAL**

Flea has always been different from other students in school. He’s not smart or athletic, he’s shorter than kids five years younger than him and his facial features are so pointy that everyone avoids him. His foster mother constantly warns him to avoid attention, though Flea has no idea who’s after them. But Flea has recently discovered several abilities that change his life forever: snowy weather follows him wherever he goes, he stops snowballs in mid-flight and he builds anything in shop class in the matter of minutes despite his lack of training. An appearance on The Great Build-Off – a popular construction game show – leads him to a magical place he thought existed only in Christmas stories.

At the North Pole, Flea feels even more like an outsider. In fact, this storybook village reminds him of every school he’d ever attended, complete with overachievers and underachievers, popular elves and outcasts, even elves who aren’t afraid to march to their own beat. But during his training to become a proper builder elf, he discovers that the North Pole has an arch-nemesis bent on invading the elfish lands and ending Christmas forever. With a war looming against the South Pole, Flea’s sudden appearance at the North Pole is no coincidence, as he questions his role in the fate of the world’s greatest holiday.

“The North Pole Challenge” is not your typical Christmas story. Everyone knows about Santa Claus, his elves and the North Pole but this book provides a fresh outlook on the old familiar tales. Imagine Santa Claus as a reclusive loner, Rudolph as a narcissistic whiner, the elves as cruel party animals. And no great story would be complete without an enemy of epic proportions, another familiar Christmas name with a wicked past never before told…

Until now...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Christmas Winner Dec 24 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The North Pole Challenge is a 5-star Christmas read suitable for the entire family. What a cute and highly enjoyable read.

Flea is an orphaned child who lives with his Aunt Mabel and is something of a misfit at school where he doesn't really fit in and is bullied. But he has a very good skill at crafts.

He is mysteriously kidnapped and finds himself at the North Pole in Santa's village where he becomes an elf. It is Harry Potter with elves, but not nearly as dark a storyline. There are a few shocker moments and some tragedies, but overall a delightful Christmas tale. You get to meet an assortment of characters -- Jack Frost, an army of snowmen, Santa, Mrs. Claus and other characters at the North Pole.

A really refreshing read and the first in a series of five books in the Flea series. This one is a real Chrismas winner for only $1!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun May 31 2012
By Jennifer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Here is my confession, I am a 40 year old mother and ESL teacher. I love to read all types of books and when I find myself dealing with more stressful times in my life, I enjoy tking a break with lighter reading. I originally came to know of this author from Pixel Of Ink ( a great site to get free Kindle books and be introduced to new authors) and saw from the description that it won an award for best unpublished book in New York.

So I know what you may be thinking. A lot of the free books out there are not very good. They lack editing and many times the storyline just lags. NOT SO for this book. I loved it. The story and the characters are charming. It is Harry Potter populated with elves, but doesn't go as dark. There are struggles and the main character, Flea, has to grow up quickly and adapt to a new world while dealing with a mortal enemy. So while the basic plot is familiar enough, Kevin George adds so many new elements that are a delight to read about. The major plot twists are no so difficult to foresee for an adult reader, but it doesn't matter. It is watching Flea's journey in the books that is so enjoyable, not waiting to see what will happen. And there are a few shocker moments of tragedy which are dealt with sympathetically and consequeces of foolish actions are explored.

I am not good at writing reviews, but I hope anyone who took the time to read this will take the time to read The North Pole Challenge. It was a refreshing read and I have since read following three books. I will be getting the final book soon. If you like fun adventure stories and love Christmas, this series won't let you down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Flea Dec 9 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I had to write a quick review on this story, because I adored it. I have since then read the next 2 in the series and can't wait for the next installment. If you are like me and want badly to believe in christmas and all the characters that go along with it then you will also adore this story. From the very beginning I was taken in and couldn't put it down. When I was scanning through the endless library for my kindle I was looking for a adventure of christmas without the sappy romance behind it all and I was so pleased with what I found here I had to purchase the next two stories I anxiously await Flea's fourth Christmas, The Frostie Challenge.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to Christmas Literature Jan. 29 2013
By S. Wildman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Before I begin, I ought to say that I received a free copy of this not from Amazon but from the author. Just for full disclosure.

That said, let's talk a little bit about the North Pole Challenge. It's a cute book. I was a bit skeptical but the description drew me in and the idea behind the whole plot - while not unique - seemed like a really nice set up for a great Christmas book. Christmas books aren't that easy to write and make good. Christmas as a whole is a pretty gimmicky holiday and most Christmas literature is pretty hokey and cheesy and feel good. I'm not going to say that this book is all that different. It tries to be and I appreciate that. You don't get the same Christmas cookie cutter sort of story and there is some pretty genuine conflict. It's a lot like Harry Potter if instead of being a wizard he's actually the child of one of Santa's elves.

I liked the plot. I liked the setting. I liked the twist on general Christmas in general. But mostly, I liked Flea. In the beginning of the book he is an outcast. He's a special kid who just doesn't fit in. He's smaller than other boys, his face is really angular, and it's clear he doesn't belong. He's a foster kid. Somewhere out there is the place he belongs. He just doesn't know where it is. During a building competition on TV, though, he proves himself and his real skills come to the forefront. Turns out, he's got some elf blood in him and he's spirited away to the North Pole to learn to be a builder elf, building toys and what not for childrens' toys. Except, he doesn't immediately fit in there. Honestly, he's like a much less annoying Buddy the Elf except for the fact that he really is an elf. He's a kid, yes, but he's a kid whose ready to prove himself and find his place in the world. I like that he does his best to make the most of situations and that he's just a really cool kid in an extraordinary situation. It just turns out that Flea is actually more than just a misplaced elf and it's up to him - and the reader - to follow the cookie crums where they lead.

Honestly, I really liked this book. For a Christmas book and an unpublished indie novel? It's a homerun. Hands down. You don't find books this well written and this approachable every day. Not for a dollar.

This is the first of a series and I for one look forward to the next four installments. There is a lot to learn about the North Pole, it's conflict with the South Pole, and where Flea really comes from and what he's really going to become as he grows older.
