Product Description

In the last two decades, a bizarre and violent musical subculture called "Black Metal" has emerged in Norway. Its roots stem from a heady blend of horror movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Paganism, and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.

About the Author

American documentary photographer Peter Beste has spent the last eight years working in the milieu of this insulated and secretive community. Beste's access and insight has been absolutely without precedent, resulting in an amazing photographic journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Black, Mar 3 2009
By
This review is from: True Norwegian Black Metal (Hardcover)
This is the ultimate coffee table book. The motivation for photographer Peter Beste is not difficult to understand. He is an artist who is interested in unpopular art of other humans. For the public there is a prurient desire to see inside the minds and imagery of the mainly young men who are Black Metal. This book is a photographic essay. A 40 something Canadian male who grew up in rural Canada could see something of themselves in their youth in the photos. Granted, Black Metal had not existed thirty years ago, however the imagery and sounds of AC/DC's Highway to Hell come to mind. Later to be replaced by Iron Maiden's Killers and Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance.
Metal in the new millennium has grown extreme for publicity purposes only. The 'shock' value really has no value what ever. It's been done long before and is fake. There is nothing fake about the subjects of this photo montage.

Heavy Metal may well be on it's last gasp only being propped up by the old professionals who managed to survive the music industry and bad record deals. There is nothing more disconcerting than the use of power chords, diminished and harmonic scales played by born agains to make Heavy Metal socially acceptable. I'm very sceptical to have Heavy Metal preformed by the very people to whom we rebelled against. It may sound nice however there is something not quite genuine with a mixture of Metal and puritanical Christianity. The author's photographic essay of Black Metal makes the dividing line between belief and crass commercialism very clear. He makes it obvious that the subjects of his portraits are not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They are quite well aware their images and sound are hardly meant for anyone. I would go so far as to say Black Metal should be the future of Heavy Metal for just this reason.

As a fan of true or kvlt Norwegian Black Metal I was happy to see this book come out.
I would have appreciated more images and a little more written word but this is a must for any BM fan out there.
Great for people who like silly top 40 crap as well.Maybe it will open your delusional eyes up to other forms of art.

3.0 out of 5 stars I keep this under my coffee table, Oct 2 2009
This review is from: True Norwegian Black Metal (Hardcover)
Peter Beste found himself a nice little niche market. Black metal fans are a notorious group of self-fellaters that will eat up anything that acknowledges their existance. His overpriced prints, his exhibits, now this book are all a great way to cash in on his lucky craps-shoot. Beste has a few iconic images, but the rest of it is fluff. This book had the effect of turning me off from black metal, this book documents the farce, childishness, & utter preocupation with image.
