Book Description

Feb 20 2012
Critically acclaimed memoirist Wade Rouse has gathered some of America's best known humorists—authors, comedians, and actors—to offer biting commentary on what it means to share a life, and a heart, with a dog. From battling for bed space to trying to transform a pampered NYC pup into a Texas rawhide, and from helping a shelter rescue navigate through her new life to interpreting dog run dynamics (and politics), being a canine companion has challenges as tough as any agility course, but laughter is just a tail-wag away. This collection features uncanny insight and witty prose from:• Jen Lancaster• Rita Mae Brown• Laurie Notaro• Jane Green• Beth Harbison• W. Bruce Cameron• and many others, including a foreword by Chelsea Handler's dog, Chunk

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, sweet look at "pet parents" among us! Sep 9 2011
By Bob Lind - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Did you know that the last Sunday in April is actually "National Pet Parents Day?" Not a surprising revelation, considering the growing trends of dogs and other pets becoming an integral part of what constitutes a "family" in our society today.

The very funny Wade Rouse has gotten together a group of twenty fellow authors, comedians and humorists, about half of them gay or lesbian, and gotten them to talk about their relationship with their canine companions, current or past. The result is this clever, amusing and occasionally poignant anthology, showing just how otherwise-logical, responsible people can approach insanity in dealing with their dogs, most of them shelter rescues. We learning that "training" is a two-way street, worry about our pups being accepted by their peers at doggie daycare, compromise on sleeping arrangements, and - for a partner who isn't crazy about the dog - make it clear that an "It's me or the dog!"-ultimatum would likely result in a response he wouldn't like.

With a "Paw Foreword" by Chelsea Handler's dog, the anthology includes writings by Jen Lancaster, Alec Mapa, Rita Mae Brown, Bob Smith, Laurie Notaro, Jane Green, W. Bruce Cameron and others, as well as Rouse. Rouse is also donating 10% of the royalties from the book to The Humane Society of the United States. A great holiday gift for pet lovers, which I give five full stars out of five.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, hilarious, and heartwarming read! Sep 9 2011
By Anthony Youn, MD - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Like most people, I have a dog. His name is Theodore, and he's as much a part of my family as my kids. If you, like me, love your dog, you're going to love this book. I'm a big fan of Wade Rouse ("It's All Relative" is a scream!), and this book does not disappoint. Full of laughs, tears, and warm feelings, all pet-lovers should pick up this gem. How can you go wrong with Wade Rouse, Jen Lancaster, and Chelsea Handler?

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting. Modern style of writing. Crude language. Oct 14 2011

I would be careful who you share or give this book to. It might offend some, even the most dyed-in-the-wool dog lovers.I struggled through to see if I could finish it and gave it away. More about the owners than the dogs is all I can say. Good effort and "good" reviews by most.
