Product Description

From AudioFile

Sean Naylor, a longtime correspondent for ARMY TIMES, was with the American troops during a March 2002 operation in the Shahikot Mountains of Afghanistan. Despite bad intelligence and a lack of coordination among the forces involved, as well as a lack of key combat support, U.S. Forces did well, inflicting a large number of casualties on al Qaeda terrorists. Narrator John Henry Cox gives an entirely competent reading of this detailed and engrossing work. His delivery is much like he is giving a report, calm and steady. His well-modulated baritone gives a performance that matches well with Naylor's text. From Booklist

In March 2002, U.S. forces moved into the Shahikot Mountains, hoping to trap and eliminate a substantial number of Al Qaeda fighters. They were handicapped almost fatally by their own lack of numbers, substandard logistics support, the highest altitudes at which Americans had ever fought, and the frigid weather of the mountains. Victory eluded them, although considerable damage was done to the enemy; and disaster may have been averted by the actions of special operations teams drawn from Delta Force and Seal Team 6. These operatives put on a very convincing demonstration of how much of the future of warfare may lie in the hands of small bands of experts engaging the enemy by stealth, with heavy firepower on call, firepower that wasn't always available in Operation Anaconda. Prizewinning Army Times reporter Naylor has written the best full-scale history of Operation Anaconda to date. Roland Green

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise, Aug 25 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
One of the problems for me in buying military books is that you can't always immediately differentiate between critical, well researched after-action analyses and high-testosterone ego boosts, even when the author is not one of the participants in the action. Despite a rather awkward title, this is one of the good ones. Naylor gives a comprehensive account of the immediate lead-up to Operation Anaconda, and his blow by blow account of the operation itself is exhaustive without being exhausting. What the reader gets is a thorough understanding of what happened during this critical action in Afghanistan. Naylor deals with American errors without either gloating or diminshment, and he chronicles acts of American heroism in the same way. An exciting, informative read overall.
