Review

"Not Suitable for Family Viewing is an excellent teen novel with interesting characters and a complex plot tinged with both romance and mystery. The whole is peppered with Grant's wonderful sense of comedy. There are places in the book where I actually giggled out loud. The humour does not come from put-downs or "smartass" remarks but simply Robin's own ability to laugh and to convey humour through her tongue-in-cheek descriptions of people, places and situations. Some of the fun also comes from the short descriptions of the contents of Mimi's TV shows and the obvious fact that they are exactly the opposite of what is happening in the star's real life. For instance, when Robin knows she has once again pushed Anita to the point of losing her temper and exploding, Robin's comment is, "Despite what Mimi's Thanksgiving Special might lead one to believe, this is as close to a family tradition as we get around here." --CM Magazine (4 out of 4 stars)

"Venturing into new territory with her latest young adult offering, author Vicki Grant still manages to infuse her narrative with her trademark humour and wry wit...Her characters are imminently likeable...and the plot is original and will keep the reader guessing until the end. Grant also creates a thought-provoking portrait of life in a small town as Robin gets to know the residents of Shelton and the events that have shaped it as a community. Part mystery and part family drama, this book is an altogether enjoyable story of discoveries...self-discovery, the discovery of long-hidden family secrets and the discovery of numerous truths, both of a deeply personal and also an utterly universal nature." --Atlantic Books Today

Product Description

Robin has everything a girl could want. Thanks to her mother the internationally beloved talk show host Mimi Schwartz--Robin's got the money, the means and the connections to make even her wildest dreams come true. So why, then, does she choose to sit alone in a dark room watching endless reruns of You, You and Mimi?

Don't ask Robin. She doesn't know--not, at least, until the bizarre discovery of an old high-school ring propels her to ditch New York for a tiny Nova Scotian fishing village. In her quest to solve the mystery behind the ring's origin, Robin finds more than a renewed joie de vivre. She discovers love, the truth of her own background--and the shocking secret that helped make her mother a star.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great read, Oct 16 2009
This review is from: Not Suitable For Family Viewing (Paperback)
It's about a teenager who is sort of depressed because she has a mother who's sort of like Oprah, but not very caring. The girl finds out that her mother has a secret past, so she goes to this little place in Nova Scotia to find out what happened. It's funny and sad at the same time. I really liked it, I almost cried at the end when she found out what the secret was and why her mother was the way she was--but it had a good ending, and the girl meets a cute boy too.
