4.0 out of 5 stars "I'm Gonna Be"...listening to this CD a lot!, Feb 23 2010

While 2009 is still fairly fresh in our minds, we can look back and see that there were some CD's released that flew a bit under the mainstream musical radar, yet they're more than worth a good listen to; this is one of those CD's. Twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid became household names on this side of the pond in 1988 with the songs "I'm On My Way" and "I'm Gonna Be", with it's incredibly catchy chorus and the boy's heavy brogue, the latter song became a Scottish anthem, one of the best party/pub songs ever and 3 and a half minutes of pure fun. Both songs came from the "Sunshine On Leith" CD and as successful as the album was, it would be 6 more years before the guys released another album, and from 1994 to 2007, they released 4 more CD's, which takes us up to this disc that hit the shelves late last summer.
The CD kicks off fast with a rockabilly beat (think Shakin' Stevens meets The Stray Cats) on "Notes & Rhymes" and the twin's trademark brogues are unmistakable, making this song sound familiar while still being new. For the most part though, the remaining songs on this CD are mellower than the first track but that's not a negative thing. "Love Can Move Mountains" and "Shadows Fall" are deep and meaningful. There are 2 songs in particular that truly stand out on this disc, as Charlie and Craig sing from the point of someone who's seen and enjoyed better days and longs for yesteryear on "Just Look Now" and "Sing All Our Cares Away" is all about hard times, and dealing with a tough day to day existence; don't be turned off by the heavy lyrical content though, as both songs are best described by whatever word ranks above excellent. Looking at some of the other tracks, it's obvious that the boys are fans of Country & Western music, given the genuine nature of "It Was Always So Easy To Find An Unhappy Woman" and a huge sonic nod goes out to fellow Scotsmen Big Country on "Three More Days", while "Wages Of Sin" walks a similar path to that The Commitments walked almost 20 years ago.
It's amazing when you realize that it's only a few years short of a quarter of a century that the Reid brothers first got our attention, and also that every generation since then loves "I'm Gonna Be", the mere fact that they're still strumming away is a testament to their talent. This CD is very much like their breakthrough one from 1988-thoroughly enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars I thought we'd change things, but we didn't change a thing., July 3 2009

I hand it to Craig and Charlie Reid for persevering over the past 22 years since the release of their debut. I mean they aren't well known in the U.S. other than their one top 40 hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" from their second album "Sunshine On Leith". Also, too, a seven year gap of no music between 1994-2001 could have easily killed any other artist's career.

No, these guys are different. As unique as their music, though they are often compared to The Everly Brothers for lack of imagination. I find them to be more like The Kingston Trio--shouting their opinions and views in clever and sometimes humorous ways.

Their eighth album "Notes & Rhymes" follows in the same tradition as 2007's "Life With You" and 2005's "Restless Soul". Slick production, full band, and half an album's worth of good material. Every Proclaimers' album has several good songs on it, but they also tend to have half a disc's worth of mediocre songs. The same is true here. The Proclaimers are never bad, but they can be boring at times.

The best songs here are the Adam Ant, "Goody Two Shoes" beat of the title track, the first single "Love Can Move Mountains", "Three More Days", "Just Look Now", "Sing All Our Cares Away" and "I Know". The rest is just average. I keep hoping that The Proclaimers will shed their 1960's sounds and get more modern, or maybe go back to their roots with an acoustic album like their debut. I guess I will have to wait at least another two years.

Here's how "Notes & Rhymes" compares to their previous work:

1987 This Is The Story: Four Stars
1988 Sunshine On Leith: Five Stars
1994 Hit The Highway: Three and a Half Stars
2001 Persevere: Three and a Half Stars
2003 Born Innocent: Two and a Half Stars
2005 Restless Soul: Three and a Half Stars
2007 Life With You: Three Stars
2009 Notes & Rhymes: Three Stars
