Playing Tony Soprano's long-suffering wife Carmela in The Sopranos may have put Edie Falco's career on the map, but the role that should keep her there is her remarkable portrayal of the title character in Showtime's Nurse Jackie. The 12 highly entertaining episodes (on two discs, plus bonus material) from the series' first season introduce one of the more nuanced and conflicted characters in recent TV history. Falco's Jackie Peyton takes nothin' from nobody ("A quick question?" she says to one colleague. "Shut up."). She berates arrogant doctors who don't meet her standards, works harder and longer than anyone else, and exacts justice by whatever means necessary (even ethically or legally questionable ones) on those who deserve it, be it patients or coworkers; she may also be the only person at her New York hospital who genuinely cares about what she does and who she does it for, bringing a little hope and compassion to the poor, downtrodden souls who come to the hospital on what may well be the worst day of their lives. Then there's her personal life: Jackie's addicted to the pills she takes to dull her back pain, most of which are supplied by her boyfriend, the hospital pharmacist, who has no clue that she also has a husband and two young daughters waiting at home (somehow, Jackie manages to sustain this balancing act through almost the entire season).

The tone of the show is profane and darkly funny, with top-notch writing, creative camera work (including occasional special effects), and confident direction. Medical issues (running the gamut from a woman with lupus and a guy whose date's ex buried a steak knife in his chest to a senior with a stroke, gunshot victims, and beyond) are treated seriously and realistically--doctors make mistakes, and patients die. As for the various other regular characters, they're vivid and just as flawed as Jackie is, but the focus is nearly always on Falco, as it should be. Bonus material includes two audio commentary tracks and a couple of five-minute featurettes. --Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Shows Currently on TV, Jun 9 2011

This review is from: Nurse Jackie: The Complete First Season (DVD)
**NOTE - This review may contain spoilers**

I put off watching this for awhile because: 1)I was never a fan of medical dramas such as "ER" or "Grey's Anatomy" and 2)It received a less-than-glowing review on a website I used to consider quite reputable.

Said website was totally off-base as "Nurse Jackie" turned out to be just as clever and addicting as my other current favorites "Dexter", "Weeds" and "United States of Tara" (Showtime is certainly doing something right when they are able to produce the best shows currently on television). And when the opening moments of a show's debut episode features the theme from "Valley of the Dolls" (one of my favorite bad movies ever) I knew it couldn't be anything but great!

I never watched "The Sopranos" so I don't have anything to compare Edie Falco's performance to, but here she's just perfect playing the drug-addicted, overworked, underpaid nurse toiling at a New York hospital. She's also carrying on a sexual relationship with Eddie the pharmacist, even though she's married with two kids.

The supporting cast is also excellent and it's fun to see Jackie and her gay co-worker Mo-Mo lying in the chapel pews on their break philosophizing; or Jackie and best pal Dr. O'Hara running to each other whenever they need some friendly support for their personal crises. The running gags in the show are fresh like young Dr. Cooper's nervous tic of inappropriate sexual touching whenever he's in a tense situation.

The show can make you laugh one moment and cry the next; especially when Jackie goes above and beyond by doing something small like mailing a patient's due bills for them after they've died; or giving their survived loved ones cab fare home.

The best episode features the always-dependable Judith Ivey guest-starring as a foul-mouthed former colleague suffering from lung cancer who checks in to ask for Jackie's help in "checking out".

I also appreciated the show's basic filming technique; no done-to-death CSI-type editing here, so bravo to the producers for that.

Overall, a great series that is well worth seeing. There are commentaries on select episodes. After seeing this, I have to immediately go out and get Season Two! I'm as addicted to this show as Jackie is to painkillers!

Get this DVD. There is no show on TV like Nurse Jackie. Edie Falco is brilliant and the writing sublime. You'll laugh, you may even cry. I missed the first season and it was recommended to me - I am now hooked. If you want clever, dark comedy with a modicum of pathos - this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nurse Jackie, Aug 22 2010

This review is from: Nurse Jackie: The Complete First Season (DVD)
I was always a fan of Edie Falco on the Sopranos, but Nurse Jackie is 10 times better. She is funny, and one of the best actresses of our time. I hope this series goes on for a long time.
