Product Description

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K Unlike most books of this type, Emerson's collection of childhood folklore is arranged in a series of categories: baby games, rhymes to teach, story rhymes, and lullabies. Where motions or games accompany text, instructions are given in italics. The verses have been selected from both traditional and contemporary sources. A first-line index provides a useful way to skim contents and to locate particular verses. The accompanying illustrations are charming: airy pastel colors extend the light-hearted mood of the book. In some sections, such as those on games, the illustrations take on a teaching role, showing how the game is to be played. Illustrations are placed by the verses they illustrate and depict the verses closely enough to satisfy even the most detail-conscious child. The delightful children that dance across the pages include an ethnic mix unusual in books of this genre. The design of the book is excellent, from the nursery rhyme characters that decorate the end-papers to the tiny illustrations that march along the top of each page. Many illustrations include mothers and fathers cuddling babies or young children. While there are many fine "Mother Goose" collections to choose from, the design, arrangement, and thoughtful illustrations make this one an excellent choice. Constance A. Mellon, Department of Library & Information Studies, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Dec 12 2001

This review is from: The Nursery Treasury (Hardcover)
There is just about every rhyme I remember from being a child in this book. They are easy to read and the illustrations only add to the text. The illustrations are cute and charming and are not too garish in color or drawing. I particularly like that the directions for doing the finger plays are not intermixed with the rhyme itself- so you can just read the rhyme and enjoy it without trying to do the finger part if you so desire. Very enjoyable.
