Good Book, but parts misleading,
By
This review is from: Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy, Revised Edition: The Complete Guide to Eating Before, During, and After Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
I am a nurse-midwife, so i was interested in looking at this book, since nutrition during pregnancy makes such an enormous difference in the progress of the pregnancy and the development of the baby, as well as the post-birth condition of both Mom & babe. I found the book to be generally a sensible one, especially useful for many women today who unfortunately have no idea of what a healthy diet consists of. It is clear and easy to read. I agree strongly, however, with the previous reviewer who was concerned about the author's focus on weight gain. The main problem we see in preganancies today is women's FEAR of gaining weight, & thus dieting and restricting their weight gain during pregnancy. This is extremely dangerous for the baby. VERY few women gain too much weight! In fact, there is some evidence that the healthiest babies come from Moms who gain 40-45 pounds of healthy good nutrition. Almost all normal women will gain whatever individual weight they need for their baby, their own physical stature, and a healthy pregnancy if they eat to appetite (making sure to eat a varied healthy diet with lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, and sources of good protein.) Although the author does mention that her source says 25-35 pounds weight gain is ideal (my note: it really should be no less than this, unless the mother is extremely tiny), she harps far too much on being "careful" about gaining too much or too little weight. With so many young women being afraid to gain weight in pregnancy, I would add a strong caution to parts of this book. There is much that is useful in the book, especially because women may not understand how vital good nutrition is to their pregnancy, as well as to their baby's entire future. I wish the author would revise this book to change some of her misleading information on weight gain.

Not the best source out there,

I found the advice in the book to be preachy and a little too old school nutrition (basic food groups, lean meat, dairy etc.)In a time when there is so much new evidence about alternate protein and calcium choices..Would only recommend this book to someone who is eating very poorly and needs to begin with basic information.

Just what I was looking for!,

I am still in the "planning" phase and have been searching high and low for a book to prep me for pregnancy. This book has been wonderful. I agree with the other reviewer who said that this was certainly a wake-up call. I don't know why but it never dawned on me how many nutrients the baby needs to grow and develop. I found the guidelines easy to follow and the menus and recipes included in the back of the book to be great.
