Product Description

Product Description

Billy Joel's chameleonlike leaps from style to style have never resulted in a more audacious album than 1982's Nylon Curtain. Gloriously overreaching both musically--Joel seems compelled to act as both Lennon and McCartney on this heavily Beatles-influenced disc--and thematically, he takes on everything from romance in an age of alienation ("Laura," "A Room of Our Own") to the sociopolitical causes of that alienation ("Goodnight Saigon," the moving recession saga "Allentown"). And it all works. As a portrait of a pop artist getting the Big Ideas out of his system, The Nylon Curtain is hard to beat. --Rickey Wright

well, his best. April 13 2004

it might sound out of context, but, Billy has always been a devoted beatle fan, and during the recording of this album, you can clearly see their inspiration....the melodies, the sounds, it just reminds youy the beatles. No wonder why people think this is one (if not) his best album, not only because it has the beatle sound, Billy has his merits, certainly, he added his genius, which combined with the before mentioned inspiration, gave us the best Billy Joel music. I will let somebody else to write about the music........

Definately his best. Jan 11 2004
Format:Audio CD
Supposedly this album was made while Joel was doing alot of cocaine. I guess this shows on some of the music and lyrics. Obviously there is a heavy Lennon influence on alot of songs. Laura is a total Lennon song with the Plastic Ono Band drum beat and John sounding vocal. Scandinavian Skies has the string section right off a Beatles song and that vocal sounds exactly like Lennons on Good Moring Good Morning. Even after Innocent Man came out Joel said this was still his favorite album. Other great tracks are Surprises, Alllentown,Goodnight saigon, and shes right on time. This album really was the pinnacle of growth for Billy Joel and he never topped it.

Another stage in Billy's career Dec 27 2003

After listening to this album for a while, I have to say my favourite three tracks are
1. She's right on time - Just wonderful, sounds like a Fortunes song fromt he 60's btu rocks
2. A room of our own - Rocks, it reminds me of "She's a woman" by the Beatles
3. Surprises - I find it fun to listen to.

I'm actually no fan of the Beatles, though I like their early works [63-64]. But I also like Scandanavian skies. Actually, there's a line in it "The tour of Germany was bleeding into our eyes" and I cringe when I hear it, I find it unpleasant but aside from that the song is so weird and out there that it really works. Where's the orchestra is a pretty little ballad that I quite like. The first four tracks I didn't find to be that much fun, but "Goodnight Saigon" is a beautiful anthem, and Allentown is good enough to be great.
