This review is from: John Daly Prostroke Golf (DVD-ROM)
I've played a lot of golf games. Heck, I even used to play real golf until spinal issues put an end to that.
Is this game like real golf? Not really, no.
Is it fun to play? It's ok. Entertaining for a time.
Does it have an online option as advertised? Not that I can see.
I'm playing this on my PC, using a mouse. Not interested in any real move type swings, I'm happy to use the classic 3 click.
Pros:
quick and easy to pick up the controls
LH option available
all kinds of clothing options for customizing your golfer
pretty good graphics, even the golf swings look decent
easy to score low quickly
Fun golf courses, lots of cool UK courses.
Cons:
The AI John Daly is a bunter! No "Grip it and rip it" in this game. Even in the long drive challenge, the computer John Daly will bunt out these 75% power low drives. Pretty sad really. He can score just fine, but this might as well have been called Corey Pavin Buntstroke golf. I've seen Daly hit about one drive over 300 yards, while in real life he'd be busting them out all over the place. He even lays up on par 4's! How the programmers could make this mistake is beyond me.
Repetitive and annoying announcing from the TV crew. A lot of the time it doesn't even correspond to the shot hit.
John Daly's comments quickly get boring. The only one I liked is the "that's one HELLuva drive!" that you'll get sometimes in the long drive challenge.
Replays are useless, as all they do is show the exact same angle as the original shot. No alternate angles that I could find. No save option.
Replays for shots that aren't even very good. Leave a PW 50 feet short? Replay!
On some replays, the fans magically appear right around the golfer, even at times right in front of him.
Water hazards are played as out of bounds, with a stroke and distance penalty. What? Who doesn't know that water hazards aren't out of bounds? Seems like a real shortcut by the programmers.
Unlocking each tournament requires beating John Daly at 4 challenges on EACH course. You'll kill him at long drive, but the approach shots and putting can be tough as he's good at those. The 9 hole match play isn't hard to win.
The first 5 tournaments are 9,9,9,18 and 18 holes. Not exactly tour length. Hoping they get longer as the game goes on.
The really cool courses have to be unlocked, so you can't just play a friendly round on over 1/2 the courses that come with the game. Kind of annoying.
Putting is way too easy with the swing path thing. You'll be making 40 footers on a regular basis.
The ball doesn't show up real well on the screen, especially around the green. It almost blends into the green surface on some shots.
Not a lot of detailed graphics. The sky never changes, clouds never move. Some tree movement, but nothing overly interesting.
Is it worth buying?
For the current price of $3.88, a good value. For $20, not worth it. Unless there's a patch to turn John Daly from a betty bunter to the real thing, it doesn't even have the minor interest of playing against Daly going for it.
