The illumination of the MIL drew my attention to a malfunction on my 1999 Yaris.
'Experts' at the MOT station said I needed a new Lamba sensor. I was not wholly convinced. However, not having any electronic or electrical knowledge I decided to buy Haynes OBD 11 book and swat up.
From the book, I established the true cause of the problem-----a Mass airflow sensor was not functioning.
I photographed the sensor coils within the housing of the sensor a found considerable contamination, probably silicon coating the wire coil. See photo.
Having cleaned up the coil, subsequent OBD tests proved to be successful and the scanner showed NIL codes!!!
Photo of sensor available.
Another excellent Haynes publication! Contents include the generic DTCs and where sensors are probably found on your passenger vehicle. I was hoping to learn what and which code scanner I should get, as I went with an entry level and not a manufacturer/high-end; I have no problems with an accompanying ODBii Haynes manual and my simple code scanner.
Glad to have a Haynes manual!

Good book that helps you to troubleshoot your car. Gives solid information on how devices and automotive systems work.Published 2 months ago by Michael Kunka
A good enough book, but probably too expensive for the info inside. It's all available on the internet so save your money.Published 3 months ago by Amazon Customer
I found the book rather short on tech info. Everything in this book was probably in the info I received with my scanner. I gave it 3 stars because of how quickly it was delivered.Published 3 months ago by Bad Daddy
Helps me in understanding the, what appears to be, complete lack of logic in the OBD-II system in my cranky 99 4WD BlazerPublished 8 months ago by Creston_CVCS
