4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but Predictable, July 11 2006
By K. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Obsession (Paperback)
This reader admits to being an "oftentime" fan of Jackie Calhoun's books. Most of her stuff is enjoyable and easy to read. However, although her characters have different names and life in different places, the stories are often very similar. The most common theme is about a married woman who decides she's a lesbian and leaves her husband. Such is the case with `Obsession,' but the book is still worth reading.

Lindsey Brown has been married for many years and has two grown children who are about to fly the coop. Lindsey and her husband own and operate a landscaping business and nursery. Her life seems to be perfect until butch lesbian Sarah Gilbert walks in to buy new plants for her yard.

Sarah seems to immediately take to Lindsey, but Lindsey resists her charms. However, intrigued by the other woman, Lindsey finds herself visiting Sarah's gay and lesbian bookstore. Surprised, Lindsey runs into her gay brother at the bookstore. After realizing Lindsey's interest in the film `Desert Hearts,' he encourages her to get to know Sarah better and gives her a place to do some much-needed soul searching about her life. It takes a lot of persistence from Sarah, but Lindsey finally gives into her desires. That's when her real troubles begin. The reaction from her kids could be expected, but her husband's reaction is interesting to say the least.

It seems Calhoun writes from personal experience. This approach has worked well for her and made her a successful author. If you've enjoyed her other books, you're sure to enjoy this one as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a page turner !, May 26 2006
By E. B. MULLIGAN "Bronwyn" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Obsession (Paperback)
I don't want to give any plot away but it's not a story I'll soon forget.

It was like watching a very nice woman get in the Engineer's seat on a train that is her life and watching the train wreck - it was actually fascinating. Infidelity and obvious poor choices are ususally a turnoff for me but I'm glad I read this novel.

I think the reader is supposed to be questioning the choices made because so is the lead character. I especially liked that none of the loose ends were tied up by the last page - I thought it very true to life.

I want to start this review by stating that Jackie Calhoun is the best lesbian author out there! This was an amazing story about love and the decisions you have to make in your life. Do you pick what society wants you to or do you pick your happiness?? Jackie...you rock!!
