Though he had made comedies with Robert De Niro (Hi Mom, Greetings!), a horror movie (Sisters), and a rock musical (Phantom of the Paradise), it wasn't until this 1976 film that Brian De Palma truly announced himself as the heir to Alfred Hitchcock. Written by Paul Schrader, this film is an homage to Vertigo, with its own stylish twists and turns. Cliff Robertson plays a businessman who, while traveling in Italy, meets a young woman (Genevieve Bujold) who is a dead ringer for his late wife, who had been killed in a kidnapping years earlier. As he woos and wins her, the vibes get creepier and creepier because, well, something's not right about this woman. Interestingly, this film came out the same year as De Palma's Carrie, a much more successful movie at the box office. But it was this movie that, for all its flaws, proclaimed De Palma as a stylist with a sure-handed command of visual storytelling. --Marshall Fine

Loved this movie, especially the acting by Cliff Robertson and Genevieve Bujold. Not too many mystery/dramas are made today to compare to this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars One the Greatest Thrillers, and DePalma's Best July 2 2004

This Film is just astonishing from start to finish.
It has a stellar cast, some of the best direction ever, and a very haunting , compelling score by Bernard Herrmann.
The story and the climactic ending will probably leave you feeling many different emotions. It did me.
I loved the scenery in the film , the locations, the use of the camera ,all thanks to Mr. Brian DePalma.
This is by far his greatest films, and he has many, but this one just took me by surprise, and tugs at your heartstrings.
I hope you will watch this film and feel the same way as i do about it.
It's one very compelling film, and highly overlooked, but it should not be overlooked, because it is a cinematic treasure.
Yes, it does feel like Vertigo a bit, but it stands on it's own, and is so very different than Vertigo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Haunting thriller score ever!!! Nov 4 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
I have to admit i love this film for it's unbelievable Bernard Herrmann score. It rivals all his other film scores and seems to be an homage to all of them together as well. I recall when i first saw this film on tv as a kid, i was only interested in Brian Depalma's reputation as a horror director(Sisters, Carrie etc. i was a big fan) But i was totally blown away by the breathtaking action and heartbreaking storyline of this film. However it was ultimatly that powerful score with it's haunting chorus that did me in. Most especially at the film's absurdly surreal finish, where it resonates like a macabre waltz echoing the films tragic 'love' story(And the dvd carries an excellent 5.0 surround sound track that sounds like the orchestra itself playing in your home) If you like Depalma, this is like his ultimate Hitchcock film, and especially if you like Herrmann this is arquably his best score ever. Such a shame classy stuff like this 'minor' Depalma get over looked while his in your face 'Scarface' gets all the attention. This film is impeccable in it's content. It is tastefully done with very mild profanity, and no vulgarities(a breath of fresh air) Yet it's very adult theme still haunts long after the film ends, as does it's powerful score.

4.0 out of 5 stars Minor flaws (like the re-written ending), yet great film!
DePalma's first 'big' like production (Sisters and Hi Mom were more independent 'looking') is a look back to Hitchcock's Vertigo and was a nice break from the Jaws and disaster... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of "Vertigo", but lots of great De Palma touches, too
This early De Palma movie is dreamlike and artful, yet still works as a bang-up suspense thriller. The DVD has lots of interesting extras, too.
