Review

"Scholastic has assembled some of CanadaÂ’s most talented writers to pen an outstanding history series called 'Dear Canada.' Through careful research, gifted storytelling, credible and likable characters, the... books in this series bring the past to life through the stories of ordinary young people who lived through the extraordinary early days of our country." (TodayÂ’s Parent, Five Star Review) "Written by well-respected childrenÂ’s authors to introduce children to important aspects of the social history of Canada." (City Parent Magazine) "What fine fiction these books are." (Books in Canada)

Product Description

With over 400,000 books already in print, the Dear Canada series has fast become the book series for children. Each fictional diary invites readers into the world of a girl living through a particular period in CanadaÂ’s past. Gillian ChanÂ’s latest addition illustrates the effect the Chinese Head Tax has on one young girl and her family. Mei-ling and her father are struggling to pay the head tax that will allow her mother and brother, who are still living in China, to come to Canada. They must have that money before the impending Exclusion Act bars any more Chinese from immigrating. What will happen if they canÂ’t come up with enough in time to reunite their family?

5.0étoiles sur 5 Can Chin-Mei_ling help her mom?, Jui 21 2006
Par A grade 4 student (First Avenue P.S., Ottawa) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I want to read this book over and over again. It's really good!

In this book, a Chinese girl named Chin-Mei-Ling goes to Canada with her dad. Her mom and baby brother stay in China because they don't have enough money to bring them.
Chin-Mei-Ling is the teacher's pet. Everybody teases her, especially Ivor. He does really mean things, like once he stole a dictionary. It was a prize for a spelling contest. When his teacher found it, it was broken. Even though Chin-Mei-Ling was the best worker in the class, she got a tutor named Miss McDonald. Her friend Bess was her only friend. Bess was really nice at the start of the book but then she started getting mean, like after Christmas she started stealing dolls. So she didn't have any more friends.
During the book, Chin-Mei Ling gets letters from her mom saying how she is doing. One of the letters said that her mom was sick. Do you think she will get better?
Soon Chin- Mei-Ling decides that she should start earning money so her mom and baby brother can come to Canada. So she starts to walk kids to school. Chin-Mei-Ling gets 50 cents each day. Will she get enough money to bring her mom and baby brother?
I recommend this book because it has a lot of characters and it's a little adventurous.

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
An Ocean Apart: The Gold Mountain Diary of Chin Mei-ling by Gillian Chan is yet another great book in the wonderful historical fiction series, Dear Canada.

Mei-ling, nicknamed Mei, is very sad. She and her Baba are living in Vancouver, British Columbia, but her Ma and Little Brother are a long ocean away from them, in their small home village in China. Baba works two jobs---a restaurant, and cleaning for a mansion---and Mei goes to school, though she's always trying to convince Baba to let her work. Every day, Mei faces the challenges at school of the extremely mean older bully, Ivor Jones. He, along with most of the other Canadian locals, make fun of Mei and the other Chinese, bringing tears to Mei's eyes. The new vote against allowing more Chinese immigrants coming into Canada is looming forebodingly over the Chinese... Can Mei and her Baba earn enough money to bring Mei's mother and brother to Canada before it's too late?

Gillian Chan has done an excellent job of narrating the lives of the Chinese immigrants living in the Chinatowns of Canada in the 1920s, before the Great Depression, and the horrible prejudices and cruelty the Chinese faced each and every day.

Highly recommended!

5.0étoiles sur 5 The Gold Mountain Diary of Chin Mei-ling (Dear Canada), Sep 24 2005
This book is AMAZING. I picked it up at my school Library, and read it in two days. (This is a historical fiction book, which means, everything that has happened in this book is REAL, the characters even, except the diary she is writting in is made up, although she could have had a diary...)

Mei (Chin Mei-ling) and her father are trying to raise money to bring Mei's brother and mother to Canada, so they can be a family again. They have to work hard everyday, at the restaurant they own, and at several other small jobs. Although it is hard, Mei and her father are determained to get the money to bring the family together again.

This book is fantastic. I will not say any more about it, except that it is an incredible story, and a must own book...
