Fantastic Book!, Oct 5 2010

I just finished reading this book with my Godson. He was fascinated by the beautiful pictures, and we learned so much about the ocean and the creatures that live on the reef through the story of a hermit crab searching for a new shell.
He picked up interesting facts on each page, and when we got to the end of the story, we found a glossary that told us more about each of the creatures that we read about!
I recommend this book, particularly as a teaching tool for our children to become interested and learn more about the ocean and the reefs and what we can all do to make sure that they are still as beautiful and lively as they are today for generations to come!

This beautifully illustrated book takes children on a trip across the reef where they learn the habits of the hermit crab and his fellow inhabitants of the reef. Through Mason's amazing illustrations and informative text young readers will learn more about the fragility and importance of coral reefs. The glossary will help them define new words relating to the sea as well as giving them important facts about the endangered coral reefs. Both entertaining and educational, this book will make readers of all ages passionate about helping to preserve our reefs and oceans.

amazing pictures for visual interest as well as entertainment and learning, Dec 5 2010

Two thumbs up from a 3 year old and a 7 year old. You don't have to be a child that can read to enjoy this book because it is visually amazing...Where many books are a lovely story with quickly sketched cartoon pictures...these are pictures so bright and pretty that a child will oooh and ahhh over them, yet so well done and detailed an adult will marvel at them right along with the kids!
The tale is a lovely one that details all the critters one might find on a coral reef...even the funny ones like the big fat puffer fish, guaranteed to make a kid giggle!
But looking deeper into the moral connection of the book allows for some teaching as you interact with your children or nieces or friend's kids or whomever you might share it with...the ocean is such an abstract thing to a child...with so much mystery. When you give a bit of personification to the creatures within who really are living out interesting lives and interaction as similarly as we do here on the land, you do develop some co,passion and understanding of stewardship to the oceans.
But, even if you don't want to get that "deep" at first, the entertainment value of the book is great and well done from tale, to visual interest, to learning and fun...
We enjoyed it.
