Product Description

From Amazon.com

Peter Serkin's advocacy of contemporary music is heard at its most persuasive in this program of works written between 1936 and 1992. He opens the program with a gorgeously colored performance of Webern's Piano Variations that captures its gemlike brilliance and sly wit. Serkin's virtuosity makes Wolpe's Toccata shine and enables him to cope with the enormous technical demands of the Messiaen, making musical sense of its incredible complexities. The title piece by Peter Lieberson is a moving tribute to Toru Takemitsu, two of whose delicate works are played with shimmering intensity. The disc ends with a spectacular performance of Wuorinen's subtly complex Bagatelle, a work of far greater scope than its name suggests. Highly recommended. --Dan Davis
