This movie flopped when it first came out, but now seems to be gaining popularity among a younger generation that doesn't remember the song it is based on. The acting was excellent, the theory is interesting and the fact that it was shot in MS is a plus. But what disturbs me are the reviewers who state that, after watching this movie, that they now understand the song. They should be aware that the song's writer has never revealed why Billy Joe killed himself or what was thrown off the bridge, so this movie represents only one of many "guesses," not a factual interpretation. While there have been many theories over the years, the one represented in the movie is a very wide departure from all the others, and the movie makes no attempt to explain why the viewer should accept this theory over the more popular ones.
