Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–When Ben, 10, buys a pet mouse, he doesn't realize that Amber is the most magical creature to be born into the animal kingdom in hundreds of years. He finds this out when his parents force him to feed her to the lizard he is pet-sitting. To save herself, Amber uses her wish power to turn Ben into a mouse. Their adventures begin as they try to free all the mice and animals from the pet store and then try to keep them safe from Nightwing, the evil bat sorcerer. This book stresses friendship, teamwork, and courage and features many lovable creatures, including a brave vole, a wise toad, and a psychic shrew. Everyone will root for Amber and Ben as they learn that their power together is much stronger than when apart. At times, the humor is too sophisticated, and the pop-culture references too intrusive, but kids will keep turning the pages, cheering their heroes on. At the end of this first book in the series, Ben is still a mouse. Hopefully, in subsequent stories, he will find his way back to his parents.–Carly B. Wiskoff, Great Neck Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars funny, April 12 2006
By M. Fitzhugh "akamel" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Of Mice and Magic (Paperback)
This book is hysterically funny, but the humor is way above any 8yr old's head. My little sister got this book for christmas, and I picked it up to look at it. After only reading the first couple of paragraphs, I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe. I found myself reading the whole book through, and never really stopped laughing the entire time. I found it funny mostly because of how crazy and extreme most of the characters were, but the humor is more easily seen by an adult than a young child.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and imaginative adventure..., July 21 2006
By Lana Smith - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Of Mice and Magic (Paperback)
Ben Ravenspell says he wants a pet, but what he really wants is a friend. He finds one in the form of Amber, a magical mouse who quickly and literally changes Ben's life by turning him into a mouse. Together, they learn and grow in courage, resourcefulness, friendship...and of course, magic.

Visual images are conjured up in the reader's mind through vivid and often humorous descriptions like this gem: "The pet shop mice had fallen asleep on a pizza, huddling together for warmth. They lay there, fast asleep, as if they were pizza toppings ordered by a cat." (pp. 213-214)

This is a fun and imaginative adventure into a world of mice and magic from which the young reader will return with a sense of awe and a new respect for those small creatures we often refer to as "vermin."

4.0 out of 5 stars New favorite audio book, May 3 2011
By Sheryl "Ofiddledeedee" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Of Mice and Magic (Paperback)
Our new favorite book on tape! Very original and unusual. Not a rehash of your typical talking magical animals on an adventure. If your family enjoys the Redwall series or similar titles then you will enjoy this. There were a few times when we backed the audio up to make sure we actually heard what we thought we heard. It would make a good movie. I can't believe this isn't more popular! The reader's voice was very enjoyable in the audio addition we found, and he did the different characters in a convincing manner. We are looking for a sequel!
