Product Description

Amazon.ca

Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do.

Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend," Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This special edition features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews of producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars the start to a spellbounding career May 6 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Off the Wall is a great album for fans of r&b/disco and jazz music, it definitely is an amazing start for michael, but he really blossomed with Thriller, Bad and Dangerous when he started having more creative control over his music. My favourite songs on here are the classics Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You, which I still hear a lot on the radio or in clubs, and I also love the jazzy I Can't Help It, the track Get On the Floor, the funky disco number Burn This Disco Out and the others. A true r&b classic that set stone for modern r&b music. Everyone such as justin timberlake, usher, britney spears, musiq soulchild, janet jackson, neptunes, beyonce, jill scott, mary j blige, brandy, glenn lewis have turned to Off the Wall for musical inspiration and it shows. Buy it today to hear the man behind the music from this album that would become a classic 25 years later. And the best part is that he is extremely talented and original and I'm sure all the artists I named would agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SOUL CLASSIC July 8 2004
Format:Audio CD
Back in the day this record was all over the clubs. A SOUL CLASSIC and Michael's best dance record. So why does EPIC have to gum it up with commentaries? Put that kind of stuff on a separate disc if it must be included. This kind of stuff is all too prevalent in remastered reissues. Record companies should just LEAVE IT ALONE. Put out the reissues the way they were intended. I just wanna hear the music, man.

Format:Audio CD
the album was Michael coming out party the album was his chance to put the music out that he wanted us to hear it included a lot of disco music this showed Michael's ability to keep up with the times it also showed everyone who doubted him to keep up his fame as a artist despite his growth one of with classics like "Don't stop till you get enough " Michael showed why he would later on be known as the king of pop

5.0 out of 5 stars Off the Wall is one of the Best albums EVER! May 17 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a great album. You'll love every song on this album! It is truly one of the best albums ever! Michael sounds as good as he ever has. His singing and dancing is fabulous! His songwriting ablities are amazing. He wrote Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Workin Day and Night, and Get on the Floor. These songs are all classics! Now, Michael first off, did an amazing job with this album. But, don't forget that Rod Temperton wrote Rock with You, Off the Wall, and Burn this Disco Out. Which are also great MJ songs. Temperton also wrote Baby Be Mine, Thriller, and Lady in My Life for the album Thriller. So, Off the Wall and Thriller, MJ wrote Seven of the 19 songs (Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Girl is Mine, Get on the Floor, Don't Stop till You Get Enough, and Workin Day and Night which are all genious songs) Temperton wrote: Thriller, Baby Be Mine, Rock with You, Lady in my Life, Off the Wall, and Burn this Disco Out. I'm not trying to take away from MJ's genius work, which truly is genius, but to say that you should give Rod Temperton some love. So, if you reall love Off the Wall, then I suggest that you also check into the band Heatwave which Rod Temperton played for and wrote nearly all of the songs for. So, if you dig MJ you'll also dig Heatwave just like I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Off The Wall- A great start! May 10 2004
Format:Audio CD
"Off The Wall" is certainly a good album, it was the one that really launched Michael Jackson's solo career, he had already made several solo projects in the past but no one came close to the success of "Off the Wall". Jackson certainly became a superstar after this album, if he wasn't already. But it wasn't until "Thriller" that he actually started writing most of his songs by himnself, dancing like never before and becoming the king of pop himself. The reason i'll only give 4 stars is that i believe that the true Michael Jackson sound was yet to come. "Off the Wall" is wonderful but not a very personal Jackson album, there were also more "famous" songs on other albums, only a few singles releases here. "Working Day and Night" is good but who remembers it?
"Off the wall" offers a great mix of disco influented songs, hence it's from 1979. "Don't Stop til You get Enough" which is one of 3 MJ written songs on this album puts the F in Flawless, it's a exellent disco song that still works fine. "Rock With You" is also a disco song, written by Rod Temperton, it's catchy and groovy. "Working day and Night" another MJ penned song is also disco inpired, just like "Get on the Floor" which he also wrote. The album continues with a real classic, the title track which however wasn't on many "best of" albums. "Girlfriend" is a slow ballad which is both catchy and beautiful. "She's out of my life" is perhaps the slowest Jackson song in history, i never liked it much but his voice makes it sweet. "I can't help it" is quite mediocre, but "It's the Falling in Love" is a pop sounding up tempo song.
