I found this book to not only be excellent as far as the pictures, but also be quite informative. It does not go into great detail about the subjects, but it does give you just enough. The book is great quality and very beautiful.

I bought this at the Smithsonian when I was in D.C. (I think the Natural History Museum). The guide I used when I was in D.C. is the Washington, D.C. (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE) which was fantastic and did contain some information on all the Smithsonian museums.
However if you really want to get more in depth you need this fabulous guide! Not only does it go into more detail but it discusses additional topics regarding each museum - so it's not just a "go here and see that" type of book. It varies but I particularly enjoyed the section on the American Indian museum which I completely fell in love with when I visited. It led me to certain areas of museums I might not have visited unless I'd seen the couple of paragraphs here that discussed a particular collection or artist and so on.
I brought this book home and my daughter (teen) read it through and felt like she got a very good grounding in each museum that was covered and learned a lot. The pictures are great as well. It really was the perfect guide to accompany a more general guide around for your trip to the nations capitol.

this guide details everything from walking in the front door to the castle to tarantula feedings at the zoo!
as soon as i got it, i opened it up and started rifling through the pages checking out the pics and what was available. since then i've read through the different sections and gone back to check my favorites, shared them with my mom, and started planning the perfect trip to the nation's largest collection of history and art. i can't wait to go there and know that having this book will help me on my visit.
the book details information in each section, about each building, with hours and fees, where to eat, where to shop, and where to go when you have to go. each section is also marked by different colored tabs, making it super easy to access the info you need right when you need it. and the heavy duty cover makes it very durable for a soft cover - like getting a hard cover edition in paperback size! also, inside the cover leafs, you'll find a map of the mall and the surrounding smithsonian buildings.
a great value and a must-have for visitors to this national wonder!
