Review

"The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence is a no-nonsense handbook for laboring without medical interventions. The authors point out that Lamaze is no longer a method but a philosophy: Birth is normal and women can handle it."—Melissa Chianta, Mothering Magazine

"What Lamaze Offers women isn't a 'method' but rather the confidence to stop worrying and start believing that a woman's body does birth best, and that every woman deserves patient, gentle, unwavering support through this process. This book gives women something new to 'expect': to be amazed at our own power and strength."—Jennifer Block, author of Pushed: The Painful Truth Abouth Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care

"This is a supurb book. Though it's called 'official,' it isn't written in bureaucratic language and isn't heaped with instructions. It's humane, funny, tender, down-to-earth and joyful. Essential reading for all pregnant women who seek autonomy in childbirth."—Sheila Kitzinger, author of The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth

"The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence is the first book that every pregnant woman should read before she makes any decisions about her maternity care. This book is a breath of fresh air. By following these explanations and recommendations women will gain the best chance of having a normal, natural, healthy, and empowering birth."—Marshall Klaus, MD, and Phyllis Klause MFT, CSW, authors of The Doula Book, Your Amazing Newborn, and Bonding

"This book is a wonderful resource that provides information, knowledge, and skills to expectant parents who want to play a central role in their children's births."—Penny Simkin, coauthor of Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn

"At last there is a resource that emphasizes normal birth and increases parents' confidence. The honest information and reassuring tone of the authors truly get to the heart of women's fears and allow them to explore those fears in a safe way. The book contains life skills such as communication and negotiation and tells the simple story of birth in a manner that left me in awe. I wish I had been able to share this book with expectant families during my first seventeen years of teaching and being a doula."—Ann Grauer, LCCE, CD(DONA), PCD(DONA), Past President of DONA International

Product Description

Lamaze’s vision for the future is that formal childbirth education, in person and online, should start early in pregnancy. In the second edition of The Official Lamaze Guide, the authors share Lamaze’s belief that preparing for birth and becoming a mother takes all of pregnancy, not just six weeks of formal classes at the end of the third trimester.

This new edition has been updated to reflect the latest evidence-based research on pregnancy and childbirth. Since the first edition, childbirth in the U.S. has gotten riskier. The cesarean rate has continued to rise; now almost one third of women in the U.S. have a cesarean. There’s been a shocking rise in the maternal mortality rate. More babies are admitted to NICUs, and there’s been an alarming increase in incidences of postpartum depression and post traumatic stress disorder related to childbirth. Lamaze believes that all women have the right and the responsibility to get complete and accurate information about pregnancy and birth, and to choose what’s best for them and their babies based on that information.

The second edition of The Official Lamaze Guide will showcase the six Lamaze Healthy Birth Practices, which are supported by research studies that examine the benefits and risks of maternity care practices.

1. Let labor begin on its own.

2. Walk, move around, and change positions throughout labor.

3. Bring a loved one, friend, or doula for continuous support.

4. Avoid interventions that aren’t medically necessary.

5. Avoid giving birth on your back and follow your body’s urges to push.

6. Keep mother and baby together—it’s best for mother, baby, and breastfeeding.

The mission of Lamaze International is to promote, support and protect natural, safe, and healthy birth through education and advocacy through the dedicated efforts of professional childbirth educators, providers, and parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about childbearing, respectful and encouraging, and, above all, wise., Nov 18 2005
By Jane Pincus - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Official Lamaze Guide,The (Paperback)
Reading this book is like conversing with loving, knowledgeable friends. By being so gently, matter-of-factly certain about the "elegance" of the birthing process, Lothian and DeVries strongly counter today's obstetric fear-mongering and the non-stop "medicalization" of birth.
The authors provide a calm, strengthening atmosphere, blending physiological facts with practical advice and the wisdom of experience. They encourage women to apply to their labors the strengths they acquire while meeting life's challenges. They connect childbearing to the whole of women's lives.
Positive childbirth stories abound. The authors suggest that woman-to-woman conversations are especially important, and advise carefully listening to others' experiences -- how have other labors and births unfolded, where did they flow. or not flow, and why? Pay careful attention to what is said, and what is not said, the feelings that exist beneath the words.
Readers are referred, among other sites and publications, to The Maternity Center Association's useful website (now called The Childbirth Connection) and its literature, to birth advocacy groups, and to midwifery organizations.
This book is rare in its wholehearted support of natural birth. It reclaims the word "natural," which has been so scapegoated and abused. It's one of the books I'd recommend, along with Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth, to young women as a necessary part of their learning about pregnancy and childbirth. And it's a breath of fresh air to all of us so passionately concerned with the well-being of women and their babies.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am wild about this book!!!, Nov 10 2005
By Jacqueline Levine "Childbirth Educator, Doula" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Official Lamaze Guide,The (Paperback)
At last!!! Here is a book that illuminates the miracle of what a woman's body does throughout pregnancy and birth in a wise and human way. It presents powerful, evidence-based information that explains and supports a woman's ability to give birth: it honors and celebrates this ability with the inclusion of wonderful birth stories. The book is informational and inspiring in equal measure, has a pleasing format and is movingly written. It's a first in its honesty, and the first book you should read about pregnancy and birth. I recommend this book with complete "confidence" that you will recommend it, too!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, May 16 2006
By MidwifeMama - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence (Paperback)
This book is a refreshing departure from so many of the fear-based mainstream maternity books out there. The authors clearly present the benefits of normal birth to both mother and infant with humor, compassion, and respect. The authors not only describe our present birth culture, they describe how it came to be and how we can influence it. As a midwife and a mother I would recommend this book to both clients and friends even before conception. Too few women are aware of the prenatal and birthing options that are available to them. I believe this book has the potential to help remedy this.
