Product Description

From Amazon.com

"Timeless" is an overused word, but when listening to London, Ontario, singer Basia Bulat's debut CD, Oh My Darling, her voice, choice of musical styles, and orchestral propensities come from another generation, evoking comparisons to '60s and '70s musicians like Nico and Maddy Prior. Combining a warmth and sadness perhaps best described as caramelancholy, Bulat's music is part traditional folk ("December"), part symphonic ("Little Waltz"), part samba ("Why Can't It Be Mine") and--if you can imagine--alternative drumline, where Bulat's madly uptempo, rhythm-fronted numbers feature rapid beats center stage with her voice quietly singing in the background ("In The Night," "Snakes and Ladders," and standout track, "I Was a Daughter"). Try as you might to compare or classify her, Bulat truly is an original, moving musically about in whatever direction suits her. Amidst the constant change-ups, some of the CD's greatest charms are found in the pared-down moments of quiet, specifically "Birds of Paradise," "Little One," and disc closer, "A Secret." As unclassifiable as she is, the singer-songwriter is receiving heaps of praise from the UK, and one constant is clear: fans of both traditional folk and contemporary indie rock can coexist in their collective love of Bulat's warm melodies. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Multi instrumentalist sensation, Aug 7 2008

Seeing Basia live at the Calgary Folk Fest where she went down a storm ( working the stage on her own and with the Great Lake Swimmers ) was great, she has already started adapting her songs from the album, the standout tracks being In the Night and I was a Daughter.

Her vocal has more depth and complexity to it than most of the other female singers around and this is what sets her apart.

See her live if you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, complex music, Oct 2 2007

Bulat has an amazing, unique, poetic voice. Every song on this album is great -- you won't want to take it out of your cd player, and you'll worry that you'll get tired of it because you listen to it so much, but it's too good to get old. It has an enchanting sort of quality that makes each song sound fresh no matter how many times you've heard it.

The only problem with this album is that I wish there was more of it. Best CD I've bought all year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will Not Dissapoint, Jan 24 2008
This review is from: Oh My Darling (Audio CD)
She has been called the next Feist, and after hearing her album, Basia Bulat certainly lives up to the hype. Slightly darker with more of a classical feel to it, Oh My Darling maybe not have as many catchy tracks as The Reminder but it be playing on your ipod for just as long. Pick up the CD and hear the future of Canadian indie. Standout Tracks: Little Waltz and I Was A Daughter.
