Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The author of Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons cooks up a novel of hard-won luck and the wonder of reaping blessing from calamity. It's 1937, and shy, homely, 18-year-old Violet Mathers—battered by a mother's desertion, a father's contempt and an accident that cost her her arm—has decided to travel from her Kentucky hometown to the Golden Gate Bridge, from which she plans to jump. But when her bus is totaled in North Dakota, she's put up by a warm local family, whose heartthrob son, Kjel, dreams of musical stardom with his black friend Austin, a guitar virtuoso. Pitying Violet, Kjel ropes her into a journey to retrieve Austin's brother, Dallas, a sullen but musically gifted ex-con. By happy accident, the three men fill in for a no-show band at a carnival, enthralling the first of many crowds. As the Pearltones, they soon inspire a mania of Elvis-like proportions, and Violet blooms in their company and proves a savvy manager. Landvik cuts her light, sweet prose with dashes of wryness and pinches of reality: appalled stares, clenched fists and even a burning cross greet the band as they make their way South, while bad apples threaten it from within. Landvik strings the escapades into a playful and poignant narrative, even as a backdrop of Ku Klux Klan violence and Depression-era hardship keeps the fairy tale in check.

From AudioFile

As this folksy novel opens, the sadness in Violet's life is as thick as the cream on top of the milk bucket. Faced with abandonment, cruelty and a life-altering accident, Violet has an empty heart but also finds herself open to change, which enters in the form of a parade of characters. Teres Byrne's careful reading of this homespun story is skillful and appropriate. She masterfully negotiates complex similes and the voices of varied characters, providing energy and personality. Additionally, she delineates the story's shifts in point of view, keeping the action clear throughout. This pleasurable listen focuses on the nature of human beings and how they treat one another. 5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Warming but Not Sappy!, Jun 30 2007

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Oh My Stars (Audio CD)
I was at the library one day trying to find a few audio books I could listen to while I work out at the gym. I saw "Oh My Stars" and thought to myself, "Okay, this is probably really sappy chick lit, but it could be good. I certainly like to visit that time period."

Am I glad I persuaded myself to give it a try!

This is far from the "stereotypical chick lit" that I though it was going to be.
This was a well-written novel with layers of beautiful prose! All of Landvik's characters are so memorable, even after the novel is over. Though heart wrenching in parts, Landvik gives hope and redemption in the end, so much so that I felt up lifted in the end.
Judith Ivey read in perfect pitch and helped make the characters come alive.

The only negative for me, is that it is not a good gym book. I ended up sitting and savoring this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, May 25 2006
By A Customer
If you liked "Where The Heart Is" by Billie Letts, you'll love this. With a start so achingly sad, you want to put it away, you read on to find a life so rich. Ms. Landvik descriptions are so intense and real that you can't help but be in the story. And as you are an invited listener, in a roadside cafe, right from the start, you really are a part of the story.

I listened to the audio version, and Judith Ivey's portrayals were so vivid, I could see the individuals. She only adds the already colourful narrative. A truly inspiring story.
