Alasdair Gray was born in Glasgow in 1934 and educated at it school of art. His first written works were plays, mainly for radio and television. His books are Lanark, Unlikely Stories, Mostly, 1982, Janine, The Fall of Kelvin Walker and Lean Tales (in collaboration with Agnes Owens and James Kelman).
