Wonderful Dec 1 2006

This is an outstanding. In case anyone is put off by modern and/or Polish music, this is quite accessible and enjoyable. The arrangements of old Polish music bring the dances and church music of the 14th to 18th centuries to life and show that Poland was indeed part of the general European music culture. The homage to Chopin is not exactly Chopin, but an imaginative use of the folk music of Mazovia, where Chopin was born and likewise drew on for his inspiration. First class performances and recording.

I'm not a fan of "modern" Polish music; it's too loud and dissonant for my taste. But these pieces are more like the Vaughn Williams and Holst treatments of British folk music. The performance is strong and the sound quality is good as well.
Excellent Music, Excellent Recording Jan. 4 2015

I grew up in the 50s listening to the Old Polish Suite played in our house and am ecstatic at finding a recording of it. This recording is fresher and more lively than the one that I had been accustomed to hearing. The sound quality of this Naxos recording is very good as well. The music is along the lines of Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances. As for the rest of the music on the album, it is similar--an effort to capture centuries-old music without adding too much of a contemporary twist.

Incidentally, the very recording I had grown up listening to can be found on iTunes by the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw. The track titles on that album are mixed up and inaccurate, but you can find your way around them if you know what you are looking for.
