4.0 out of 5 stars Trois oeuvres de jeunesse de Weinberg Dec 7 2008
By JRL
Format:Audio CD

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Piano Quintet Dec 7 2008

Weinberg (also spelled Vainberg) is a Soviet composer of considerable skill who has been getting more attention over the past ten years. A few weeks ago I saw the ARC Ensemble perform his Clarinet Sonata and Piano Quintet live, and the performances were impressive enough that I purchased their CD. Weinberg's works are always tuneful, as can be evidenced by these works, and out of them I love most his Quintet, which is full of ideas, tension, and dramatic flair. For those who would like a point of reference, I would grant that there are some similarities between Weinberg and Shostakovich.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb but ill-known music by a nearly-vanished composer Nov 12 2012

Mieczyslaw Weinberg was unknown to me until the Pacifica Quartet performed one of his string quartets. I feel that it opened a whole flood of amazing, powerful music. This CD has a great variety of Weinberg's chamber music, vocal and instrumental, and will, I hope, awaken a wide awareness of the power and beauty of his music. The performances are extremely well done, fully presenting the essence of the music.
