Product Description

From Amazon

One Good Story, That One, Thomas King's fabulous collection of short fiction, focuses, like his novels, on contemporary First Peoples and their interactions with a sometimes hostile, often misguided, and always different white culture and society. "One Good Story, That One," the title tale in the collection, focuses on a Native elder's brilliant hoodwinking of gullible anthropologists into buying his authentically Native alternative version of the Judeo-Christian creation myth, which mixes the voice of traditional Native oral storytelling with the hijinks of "Ah-damn" and "Evening." These stories are King's riffs on everything from pop culture, Canadian history and First Peoples customs and traditions to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and trickster tales. King's delicate sense of irony mingles with a madcap sense of humour to concoct short stories that are as hilarious as they are provocative. One Good Story, That One is a waggish collection that makes you hungry for more books by this talented writer. --Jeffrey Canton

Book Description

Named in the University of Toronto Bookstore Review as one of the top100 Canadian books of all time

There is much more than one good story in this bestselling (over 10,000 copies sold) collection of short fiction. In fact, there are more than a few of the best examples of native storytelling ever published. Thomas King, author of the acclaimed Medicine River and Green Grass, Running Water, and the newly released Truth and Bright Water, has proven he has a magical gift, a fresh voice and a special brand of wit and comic imagination.

One Good Story, That One is steeped in native oral tradition, led off by a sly creation tale, introducing the traditional native trickster coyote. Weaving the realities of native history and contemporary life through the story, King recounts a parodic version of the Garden of Eden story, slyly pulling our leg and our funnybone.

A collection that is rich with strong characters, alive with crisp dialogue and shot through with the universal truths we are all searching for, One Good Story, That One is one great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cunning, mischeivious., Dec 27 2009

Cunning, because the 'stories' are simple and enjoyable, but you know you are not 'getting' them. There is a whole depth of Aboriginal history and humor to be taken into account and at times I thought the simplicity/hilarity of some of these stories was just plain stupid. But of course I know that is only a reflection of my own ignorance of this genre. So, you see, I have been tricked into seeking discussion with the Aboriginal folks I know and have be blown out of the water by their analysis. This book is certainly a lot more important than I understand.

I respect Thomas King deeply and his book 'The Truth about Stories' is one I gave to friends at Christmas. I won't be doing that with this book. However, I did donate it to the Friendship Centre and I'm sure lots of folks will get comfort and enjoyment from it.
