With One Hockey Night, David Ward and Brian Deines offer up a sequel to The Hockey Tree, which won a Saskatchewan Young Readers’ Choice award in 2007. In the new book, hockey-loving siblings Owen and Holly move from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia. They dearly miss the frozen lake on which they used to play shinny, and are forced instead to play in their driveway. Unbeknownst to them, however, Dad is secretly building a rink in their new backyard.
Yes, that’s right: secretly building a backyard rink.
Younger readers may not know that it takes at least three days to build a backyard ice-rink, but it’s a sure bet even they know that houses have windows, front and back. That’s why, when Owen and Holly’s father rules their backyard off limits, it is simply inconceivable that the two kids would not be compelled to look outside to discover what he is up to.
But they don’t. Instead, they merely exhibit a kind of dazed and feeble curiosity. Deines’s canvas-textured visual style, which gave The Hockey Tree such a beautifully soft and dreamy feel, backfires here, making it seem as though Owen and Holly exist in a hazy stupor.
Of course, there’s no indication that Owen and Holly are not bright children. Perhaps it is the book’s young readers who are expected to play dumb for its unsatisfying and unlikely scenario.
Owen and Holly have just moved to Nova Scotia from Saskatchewan and everything is different. There are still boxes to unpack, and playing hockey in their new driveway just isn't the same as skating around the frozen lake back home. Neighbours come around to help their mom and dad, but with Christmas only a few days away, Holly and Owen really miss the friends they left behind.
Little do they know that this year, a special surprise awaits them. On Christmas Eve, their father reveals what could very well be the best gift ever — a brand new backyard ice rink, filled with a whole community of new friends!
With breathtaking artwork and a poignant story filled with holiday spirit, this wondrous new picture book will warm the hearts of all who read it.

One Hockey Night,
By Tami Brady "Whole Health" (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: One Hockey Night (Hardcover)
Owen and Holly had just moved to Nova Scotia. They missed their friends back home in Saskatchewan and they especially missed the frozen pond where they used to play hockey. Skating on the ice in the driveway just wasn't the same. What the kids didn't know was that Dad was building then a surprise. Busy in the back yard and the garbage, he was up to something. Then, on Christmas he revealed his big surprise... Hockey, the greatest game in the world. We simply can't wait until it's time to build a rink in our yard. The best thing about a Canadian winter!
