Product Description

From Library Journal

This book made a big splash when it debuted in 1973. Keith based the text on the journals and photography of Richard Proenneke, who, after racking up years of 50-hour work weeks, did what many of us only fantasize about: he chucked it all and went to live in the woods. Now in his 80s, Proenneke still abides in the log cabin he built with his own hands and has become an icon for naturalists. Though few will follow Proenneke's lead, his story can be quite inspiring.

Review

"One Man's Wilderness" is the best modern piece of prose about Alaska...the truest picture of what living in the bush today is like for the lone individual. -- Anchorage Daily News

It is soul reading-the simplicity of man's inner feelings stated in terms which leave no misunderstandings... A classic of its kind. -- Lansing (Michigan) State Journal

[Proenneke's] journal forms the text of this handsome book, and his sparkling color slides illustrate it with a beauty that tugs at your heart... -- Biloxi (Mississippi) Sun Herald

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure story..., Jan 19 2012
This review is from: One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey (Annivers (Paperback)
When i began reading this book,i didn,t know what to expect but what a good surprise! It reads like a robinson crusoe story in the wilderness.Sure,it is a short story since he talks only of the building of his camp. But then, the photos themselves are worth the price of the book..Can,t wait to read the full personnal journal!Buy with confidence..

5.0 out of 5 stars Great wilderness life story!, Nov 7 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey (Annivers (Paperback)
I just want to say "ditto" to the above review. If you've ever fantasized about spending a good chunk of time living off the land in the rugged back-country, surviving by using your own wits and muscle, then this one's for you. Well written with wonderfully telling photos. Two thumbs way up!
