Product Description

From Amazon

Mary Jo Putney explores a sensitive, challenging subject with grace and poignancy in this story of a young duke who is told he has a fatal illness and struggles to come to terms with his imminent death ... only to be surprised by love. Stephen Kenyon, Duke of Ashburton, vowing to live fully every moment of his remaining days, sets off alone across the countryside of Regency England, feeling wonderfully liberated from his ducal duties, when he becomes caught up with the traveling Fitzgerald Theater Troupe. Soon he's treading the boards and falling in love with the acting family's cheerful, down-to-earth adopted daughter Rosalind. How Stephen and Rosalind embrace their love under such sad circumstances heightens the passion and power of their romance, while Putney skillfully avoids becoming maudlin ... and dutifully provides the requisite happy ending. Rosalind's matter-of-fact approach to life contrasts delightfully with her dramatic family's emotional excesses, while her parents' loving marriage provides a fun secondary romance. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Stunned when his family physician tells him that he only has a few months to live, Stephen Kenyon, Duke of Ashburton, escapes Ashburton Hall and temporarily leaves his responsibilities behind to wander the countryside anonymously as he tries to sort out his feelings and reconcile himself to his apparent fate. However, when his heroic rescue of a young boy results in his becoming part of a traveling theater company, he meets the compelling Rosalind Jordan. In her superb, inimitable style, Putney (River of Fire, Signet, 1996) takes a pair of magnetic, beautifully matched protagonists, places them in a dark, impossible situation, and makes it work. This title is the first of Ballantine's new "keeper" series of paperback-sized hardcover romances and should be in demand by Putney fans and libraries. She lives in Baltimore.

3.0 out of 5 stars not a book that stands out, April 12 2004

This book had very likeable characters. I wanted to know where it was going to lead to. That is what kept me reading actually. A Duke decides that since he's dying he is going to take off for a month of anonymity. Wouldn't we all like to do something of that nature. Anyhow, he falls in love and marries someone most unlikely. The ending has a nice twist to it that is resolved and we can move on to the cookie cutter type happy ending. I did enjoy it, but there were no real surprises.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Putney's best effort., Jan 28 2004

I have read some of MJP's books, and this one stands out as all time favorite. What would you do when you know that you are dying and only have less than 3 months to live? Well, the hero (no less than a duke) realized that for once all his wealths and power couldn't help him, his days were numbered, so with nothing more to lose, he left the life that he knew, trying to find peace with himself. He went incognito, relinquishing all his attributes and lived as a man not a duke. MJP guided us through his struggles to cope with ultimate acceptance to dying, warm friendship from strangers and finally unconditional love from a woman. A woman so out of his league that in other circumstances their love would be doomed. But when you are dying, you tend to look at things from different perspectives. The story is so moving and poignant that I started asking myself, what would I do if I were either one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, Aug 11 2003
I never really got into his character at all, and the love scenes were kind of flat. The bit at theend where he is so ill seems to go on forever and the book generally seemed too long for a very light-weight story with characters who lacked depth. His sister was dire. His brother detracted from the book. A good way to pass the time, but not a great book.
