Review

"For many years Debbie's novels have welcomed us home. Now she invites us to come closer to the hearth of our own home and consider what our lives look like when warmed by the graciousness of a giving spirit. Thank you, Debbie, for inviting us draw near as you candidly share your heart with all your faithful readers." -- Robin Jones Gunn, best-selling author of the Sisterchicks® novels

"The lavishness of Debbie's giving-heart is proofread in her fiction....whether she's teaching us through story how to knit, connect meaningfully with others, or heal from a disease, she's does so with grace and ease. Now in her inimitable way Debbie offers us gentle and powerful reminders of true-life generosity and never drops a stitch." -- Patsy Clairmont, Author Catching Fireflies

"You are going to love Debbie Macomber. She's the bubbly friend you've always hoped to meet and the savvy mentor you've longed to know. Debbie's mission statement is captured in God's words addressed to Abraham: 'you will be a blessing' (Genesis 12:2 NIV). I'm here to tell you, girlfriend -- she's taken that promise and run with it! Blessing her loved ones. Blessing her neighbors. Blessing strangers in need. And, in turn, blessing her readers." -- Liz Curtis Higgs, best-selling author of Bad Girls of the Bible --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description

What if you, personally, could make the world a better place . . . by tomorrow?

Debbie Macomber knows the secret to doing exactly that! In a world that too often seems stingy and grudging, she has witnessed how one simple act of generosity can yield unforeseen miracles.

You are about to discover, through true stories, what happens when we commit intentional acts of generosity. Come with Debbie late one evening through the checkout line at the grocery store. Visit a midwestern train station. Discover the link between a submarine, a few bread crumbs, and some minnows. Visit ancient Galilee as a young boy volunteers his meager lunch and watches in amazement as it is multiplied many times over to feed five thousand. Listen in on a phone call with an elderly widow who has a life-touching gift to share. You will stand amazed at what God accomplishes when we make ourselves available through simple acts of generosity.

Debbie Macomber invites us to live with open hands, offering who we are and what we have to others. When we do so with an eager sense of expectancy, lives—including our own—are changed in ways we never envisioned. All it takes is one simple act. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I was very inspired by this book. It reminded me of Pay it Forward and Random Acts of Kindness. Debbie Macomber gives us numerous examples of living a generous life. She shows us that just by a simple act of generosity on our part we not only affect the person we helped we affect ourselves in profound ways. This book will touch your heart and inspire you to lead a gererous life.

Enjoyed the stories. Agree that it got a bit preachy at times. Not necessary, since the real-life stories speak for themselves. Loved this quote attributed to Pat Schroeder, "You can't wring your hands and roll up your sleeves at the same time."

3.0 out of 5 stars one simple act: discovering the power of generosity, Jan 3 2010

took the basics of gratitude and generosity and walked around it with commentary as she walked.
Brought new insights and a kind of comfort.
The constant substantiation from the Bible got to be a bit over the top
These concepts and their effect don't come from the Bible
They come from the supposed Source of the Bible, which is a human document
I enjoyed it enough to buy a copy for my friend, who is in the Gratitude business

If you are into gratitude and or generosity you'll find this book rich with speaking material, quotes and insights to help you express what you and the author seem to agree on. That there is power in generosity :-)
