About the Book:

For as long as you can remember, you’ve had a dream. You’ve longed to see your product idea come to fruition so you never have to work for anyone else again.

Stephen Key has been living this dream for 30 years. The developer of such lucrative products as Michael Jordan’s WallBall®, the Spinformation® rotating label, and HotPicks® guitar picks, he knows better than anyone how to make a great living as an entrepreneur. Key develops ideas for new products, licenses them out, collects royalty checks, and doesn’t look back. You can do it, too. All you need is One Simple Idea.

In this book, Key reveals the secrets that helped him and thousands of his students—including bestselling author Tim Ferriss—turn their creativity into a passive income generator by “renting” an idea to a company, which takes care of R&D, production, marketing, sales, accounting, distribution, and everything else you don’t want to do.

You’ll be amazed at how simple the process of licensing an idea for profit actually is. Key explains how to:

  • Keep your ideas safe—without spending time and money on a patent
  • Be your own boss—without formally opening a business
  • See your product go to market—without footing a dime in expenses
  • Make potentially big money—without quitting your day job

The age-old business assumption that ideas must come from within organizations has been shattered. From global corporations to small businesses, companies have become so confident in outside entrepreneurs that licensing is now a $500 billion industry. Businesses need “freelancers” like Key—and you—to provide creative, marketable ideas for new offerings.

With One Simple Idea, there’s no prototyping, no patents, and, best of all, no risk. You can make the system work for you—rather than the other way around.

This book explains how it is possible to turn your creative ideas into a steady income stream, without having to take out a second mortgage. Mr Key has been doing this successfully now for over 25 years, and this book is basically the blueprint to his success. Although there was information in a couple of chapters that I found slightly contradicting, upon contacting Stephen for clarification, I found his team were most accommodating in answering my concerns. By following the 10 steps detailed in this book, it will ensure that your ideas are marketable before you rush into the licensing process and will also prevent you from making the costly and unnecessary mistakes that most product developers are prone to. Highly Recommended.

Stephen Key has worked in the industry designing for Worlds of Wonder and also did freelance design work for toy companies such as Dakin, Disney and Applause among others. He then went out on his own creating and licensing his own ideas. The book details his 10-step strategy. He shares his real world experience, from ways to come up with new ideas to policing your license. Just because you sign a licensing contract doesn't mean that you can forget about it and just collect royalty cheques. He shares his bad experience with Ohio Art and also why he sued Lego.

There is something called open innovation that I never heard about before. It means that there are companies out there that are looking for ideas. He shows you why you don't have to be a marketing expert, have a degree in business or have a PhD to invent something and bring it to market. Inventing is open to the average joe. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars for a patent and years getting it manufactured and brought to market. Product cycles come and go so fast there simply isn't time to get a patent done. This is where the provisional patent comes into play. A lot of times this is sufficient to get a license although some companies will require an actual patent. The book is well-written, easy to understand and not dry at all. He provides alot of examples from his own experience. I highly recommend this if you are interested in inventing something and bringing it to the market. His advice will definitely save you money and time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but not amazing Sep 6 2011

An excellent book on the topic of licencing. Key does a great job of describing his method step by step in a logical fashion. My only complaint would be that much of what he writes is redundant throughout the book - many times he goes over the same examples again and again. Nonetheless, this is an excellent resource for those looking to grasp the fundamentals of the business of licencing.
