Pure perfection,

One size fits all indeed. It's one of few Zappa albums that can be described simply as "perfect" - there's something magical about it. FZ is known for many things, one is the great quality of his musicians, and many claim that this band was his finest. OSFA proves that that might be the case. The musical performances are beyond words, and the deep sound of the whole recording brings a powerful and convincing mood which makes you appreciate the feeling of the cover art; it sounds as it looks. Unlike a lot of Zappa's albums, this one features very few changes in the rhythm section; on bass, Tom Fowler is exchanged for James Youman on one song, but Chester Thompson plays drums, Ruth Underwood plays percussion, and George Duke plays keyboards throughout. That is definitely a reason why this album, despite alternation of styles and lead singers, has a steady main thread. Furthermore this album doesn't alternate styles as dramatically as many others - the music can fairly be described as rock/fusion, but with more weight on rock. The musicians are experienced and skilled in jazz et al., and their ensemble playing therefore brings a very unique feel to this music. The compositions are all great and powerful, and taken to even further heights by the truly dedicated musicians. Those who enjoyed FZ's three albums prior to OSFA --"Over-Nite Sensation", "Apostrophe (')" and "Roxy and Elsewhere"-- will absolutely not be disappointed; on the contrary.

There are so many great FZ albums. This counts as one of my three favorites, the other two being Hot Rats and Joe's Garage. OSFA is a very interesting collection of songs that have nothing to do with each other (except for the sofas of course) but all fit together well to make a classic album. Inca Roads' guitar solo is one of my faves from FZ. Pojamma people is awesome, pure brilliance with another killer solo by FZ. I have to say San Berdino is one of my favorite FZ songs of all time. I can't recall anything else in the FZ library that is simalar to this song. It really stands out. The lyrics are very funny and the guitars rule. You gotta listen to this song with headphones as loud as you can stand. Those guitars will melt your eardrums. I also love the Sofa #1 and #2. Musical poetry. Get this disc. You need it, trust me.

I had heard great stuff about this album and I was NOT disapointed! It's simply gorgeous from beginning to end, you can almost taste the thick layers of music filling each of these tracks!Of course I was familiar with some of Zappa's work, so I was hooked at the first listen, whereas new listeners might not be as exhilarated as me on the first try. Nevertheless, I strongly encourage you to buy this: without a doubt one of the finest Zappa albums.
