By THE MOVIE GUY HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on March 7 2015
Format: DVD
There is nothing like an oddball Thai noir film with Ryan Gosling. Ryan runs a fight club in Thailand. His older brother Billy kills a prostitute. Billy in turn is killed by the father of the dead girl, assisted by a vigilante cop (Vithaya Pansringarm). Ryan realizes his brother was no saint and doesn't enact revenge and then the over the top drug dealing potty mouthed mom (Kristin Scott Thomas) shows up to makes things worse.

The main problem with this film is that Ryan's character was never developed, or developed to the point you cared about him. It was a bad role. The drug dealing, while discussed wasn't really part of the plot other than background material. The background of Billy, was told to us as was many plot points that didn't mesh well into an enjoyable tale. Kristin Scott Thomas' character carried the film for what it was worth.

This film is clearly not for everyone and I give three stars for its uniqueness and potential, not the entertainment value.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, N-word. No nudity (unless you count art). No sex. Adult themes.

Though a bit redundant and slightly (seemingly) gratuitously violent, Refn's new opus (he previously directed Drive) stars Gosling, once again, and features quite a power-punch to the gut. Colorful, filled with actors offering great performances (Kristin Scott Thomas comes in mind), the film nevertheless lacks in the significance department and would have probably been a bit better if the director weren't so inclined to make it look like a slight parody of his own style.

That being said, his direction is still energetic, Gosling delivers, the art direction, lighting, editing and such did an excellent job telling this story, and it's not hard to think Refn being hard at work on a new project looking like Drive and Only God Forgives in the near future.

After Drive, it was hard to think Refn would deliver something as refreshing. He almost has.

Largely underrated. A small gem. May need re-watching to fully appreciate. If you like this sort of movie you may also enjoy ``Enemy`` by Denis Villeneuve, and vice versa.

Refn is at the top of his game here, visually this may be the best offering he's put forward to date. The film deals with familiar philosophical themes while maintaining a zen-like balance throughout its pacing. The protagonist is a mainly stoic character, but we understand why as Refn shows us the world both outside Julian's(Gosling) head, and in. The pacing may be daunting to those with low attention spans, but the mise en scène in this film is immaculate and informative. Only God Forgives deserves your attention.
