In today's connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, online gaming, and more, there's a lot of network traffic that your voice calls will need to compete with. PureVoice™ HD technology allows Ooma to deliver clear audio even when substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice™ HD Technology is composed of five key components:
Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that consumes over 60% less bandwidth than standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for your other online activities, and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered.
Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, those packets need to arrive without delay for optimal quality. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.
Network packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - dropped packets can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.
Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We leverage the same encryption technology that governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.
HD Voice technology doubles the fidelity of your phone calls by capturing twice the speech information of a standard voice call (yes, that even includes your landline). When you and the other caller both use an Ooma Telo Handset or other HD compatible phone, your voice will sound more natural than ever. Why put up with the inferior quality of standard definition calls when you can upgrade to HD?

*Great* value, but not without its "little frustrations",
By Colin Foster (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ooma 100-0211-100 Telo Free Home Phone Service - Canadian Version (Electronics)
I won't recap all the great features you get with Ooma, since those are on their web site. The short version of this review: It's a fantastic value, but not without its "little frustrations". My total cost is $13/mo. for the "premium" service. (You can pay as little as $3/mo if you just need the line, and no features.) Pros: - the call quality is great. Very impressive for a phone line, never mind a VOIP phone line. - the phone comes with a huge number of useful line features - the simultaneous ringing at home and my cell phone is my favourite feature. Cons: - There are 1-800 numbers that it just can't phone. e.g., I can't call Fedex. ("They're working on it." -- we'll see what happens.) - About 5% of calls I place, have to be dialled twice. (The first attempt doesn't go through.) - *Sometimes* (not often) the line can't keep up when two people talk at once. (A small delay gets introduced that confuses the conversation for a moment, like when making an overseas call... in the old days.) Interestingly, I can't phone Bell from this line, even as a local call. Was that an honest mistake and if not, whose doing the blocking: Bell or Ooma? I think Ooma is great as a second line for the home. I can use it all day for business calls, no problem. (I work from home.) But since some 1-800 numbers don't connect, I'm glad we have a second "real" line around that I can use when that's a problem. Some situations where I can see Ooma being a good solution are: - As *extra* phone lines for your family. (You can have 1 or 2 lines for the same price.) - As a phone extension for employees in a staff room. - Courtesy phone in a waiting area to be used by customers. I'll be very happy to keep using Ooma. It gives me services Bell can't and costs a fraction of what I had to pay with Bell. But it's not without its "little frustrations." So far they are little enough to keep me as a happy customer.

It actually works,

We have several friends with Magic Jack and Vonage, and with the exception of the price of monthly service, they complain about the service, having to use the computer (what happens when it crashes), voice quality, calls getting cut off, etc. The Ooma just works. It's as reliable as your high speed internet service (which is what it uses), and it doesn't appear to slow down the computers, even when making phone calls. The quality is better than with hard phone lines. We are sold. Vonage = $29.95 / month x 12 months = $350. Ooma = $3.50 / mo X 12 months = $42.00 plus the original $250 for equipment and you're still ahead at the end of the first year. And only $9.95 per month to add a second line along with premium services that area actually worth it. The call screening is wonderful. We love never having to hear telemarketers call. Just follow the directions when you install it (6 pages, big pictures and big text), sign up, select your options, and start talking.

Working well in Montreal,

This review is from: Ooma 100-0211-100 Telo Free Home Phone Service - Canadian Version (Electronics)
I've only been using this for a few weeks but it's been so good I cancelled my landline. This is now my primary phone. I've got it connected to my modem directly, and then my router connects to the Ooma telo. I figure this will give me the best shot at good quality calls. I'm using a DSL connection and even with my lowly 600 kbps upload spead (16mbps down) it still works great. Occasionaly a bit of an echo but minor. Some outgoing calls won't ring, yet the other party answers. After I dial, I just listen to the silence for a few seconds and then somebody answers. Not a dealbreaker for sure. I'm using Panasonic cordless phones and the phones recognize when I have a voicemail and I retreive it from the cordless handset. Listening to the message on the telo directly is a premium subscriber feature and I don't want to pay the extra few bucks. The Panasoninc cordless also have Night Mode and call blocking so with these cordless I can get most of the features of the premium without paying extra. I also like being able to check my voicemail and caller logs while I travel, the email notification is a premium feature but simply logging on to "My Ooma" is not and they have a nice mobile optimized website if your'e accessing it from a smartphone.
