John awakes in a pit with dead people. He was helped out by a mute oriental woman who doesn't understand English. He goes to a house. There are people inside. Everyone in the group has amnesia and a mark on their arm. The house has plenty of food and ammo. Driver licenses let the people know their names, but they remember nothing else.

The film doesn't do a great job of dropping clues, but by 55 minutes into the film, you get a better idea what is happening, but it isn't until the end all is revealed.

I liked the opening scene. It was slow and effective. I also liked the ending, how it tied things together. The problem I had was the characters. They were not entertaining or memorable. They effectively played the scared hollow headed people they were scripted to be, and that left me getting bored as they strolled through the woods.

Makes an okay rental.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Its nightime, its raining and a man wakes up in an open pit on top of a pile of dead bodies. He has two items and no memory. A mute asian woman drops a rope to help him escape. In his search he comes accross a house in the woods with more people armed and no memory as well. This is just the beginning. the rest of the film is just brilliant. Discovery, chaos, horror, violence and mistrust from beginning to end. One of my favorite movies of 2013 !!!

Very good and not what you'd expect. It keeps changing and keeping you on your toes. Don't read too many reviews though, they'll give up the surprises.

Unexpected Thrillride Jan. 14 2014

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the trailer, and was disappointed that this movie didn't release in theaters in my area, but was well worth watching online regardless. At first glace, may seem like a rollercoaster of mismatched characters, seeking explanation to who they are and where they are, and why, but intrigue takes over as they begin to recollect their pasts, and madness takes over. They find they are not alone, and are not who they think they are, nor are their circumstances as seemingly simple. There is a more sinister plan at work, but one which they do not quickly figure out until it becomes all too clear that it is not mere madness taking over, but madness that is coming to get them and they must work together, with frenzied memories of what brought them together, all too slowly coming back to them, but will they remember in time to stave off the impending mystery of what is to happen on the 18th? Very enjoyable and suspenseful

I liked it! Dec 27 2013

It was a smart twist on what would have otherwise been a tired premise. My gf made me watch it because Joseph Morgan is in it. He and Sharlto Copley did a good job pulling me into the story though and the movie was pleasingly dark for a horror fan like myself. 4 stars because it did get a little slow at times and it wasn't the most gratuitous with the violence, but it WAS just f&%$ed up enough for me to like it.

DON'T WATCH THE TRAILER!!! We watched it afterwards and it really gives a lot away.

Open Grave Review Dec 24 2013

I really liked this film. I've adored Sharlto since District 9 so I rented as soon as it was available. There are some twists and it had a nice ending that tied everything up like the previous review said. Actually liked this more than World War Z. It didn't rely on effects but it was more gritty and down to earth horror which focused on location (the pit, shacks hidden in the woods, secret labs in the basement) which helped the story because being lost in the woods is bad enough, but to have no memory and no one knows if they trust each other. Not to mention the 'creatures/people' living in the woods! It give it a realistic approach to terror. I'm actually sick of gory movies bring back more films with a story and suspense like in the days of John Carpenter's Halloween and Jaws.

climbing out of the ground Jan. 10 2015
By Bryan - Published on
Open Grave is a pretty good movie. The 3 stars is given because the plot tends to drag for a while in many areas, relying on an atmosphere that's just creepy enough to get the job done but never blowing me away and leaving me wanting more. The story isn't entirely based around people stuck in a grave trying to climb out but rather, supposed to be based around people occasionally stuck in a deep hole and a mysterious person from above throws a rope down allowing them to climb up. This is a theme that happens on more than one occasion, but the problem is that for a good chunk of the movie, we're treated to only a few actual scary moments.

Once a confused and disoriented man in the beginning of the story played by Sharlto Copley is free he stumbles inside a house where others are staying. Turns out everyone else in the house had the same fate- they had to escape an open grave. Nobody knows what's going on and who's the enemy. This movie surely has a few really solid parts. Constantly questioning who's loyal and who's not is a common occurrence amongst the group and a high point of the story, as is the segment with the crazy man stuck in barbed wire out in a field who begs to be free, only to secretly be psychotic and lure an unsuspecting man towards him and kill. I guess his scream for help actually meant "Help! I'm sick in the head!" and not "Help! I'm stuck in barbed wire!"

I *want* to say that I liked the scene where Sharlto Copley and Erin Richards characters find themselves outside screaming towards a group of men cutting wood in a field only to suddenly realize those men are the monsters so Sharlto and Erin quickly run up the hill to their vehicle, but for some reason after a typical clichéd "my car won't start!" scene where Sharlto has to push the car to get it started with the monsters quickly approaching behind him, something VERY bizarre happens next. The monsters or perhaps dead innocent people are now suddenly hanging in the air in front of the car as the two arrive to safety a moment later dismissing the matter entirely. That's the biggest "what the heck just happened?" moment ever, lol. Talk about confusing!

Also the Asian girl (Josie Ho) who refuses to talk is another memorable character. She's probably the only truly fantastic character in the movie. The acting's solid overall granted, but Josie's the best without a doubt due to her mysteriousness. Otherwise Open Grave is just a passable film. It relies mostly on quiet, slow-moving conversational moments between the characters but doesn't really build into anything amazing nor does it illustrate what the monsters are like (with the exception of the barbed wire dude) until the ending. I admit the final 15 minutes is stellar. Overall worth recommending despite the flaws.

Open Grave had a lot of suspense and kept you guessing. Great acting and original for the genre. It is worth the money.
